OB engineers assemble.

Working on a project. Refer to the picture (imagine it is full of lets just say dirt). The top pipe is an overflow pipe for excess water. the bottom pipe is perforated to allow small amounts of water to leave the system.

**What I want to do, is ONLY allow water to leave through the bottom pipe when water is leaving through the overflow pipe. So only when water is overflowing into the vertical pipe.**

my ideas so far:
1. when water falls into overflow pipe, it hits a light pressure sensor and mechanical pushes down a gate valve on bottom pipe, "opening" the bottom pipe. so this would be directly based upon the force on falling water.

2. Make the overflow exit pipe smaller than the vertical pipe. Thus creating 'ponding' within the pipe and thus pressure, pushing down a gate on the other pipe.

This may not make sense at all but I know there are some bright folks on the OB.

Soooo, this is your senior project? What is this thing?

Try making the overflow pipe buoyant and connected to a relief valve associated with the lower perforated thing maybe. Think toilet tanks.

What is the purpose of the bottom pipe when the main overflow pipe will bring the level to where you want it on its own?
To answer your question, I think the bottom pipe will eventually clog itself anyway whether it works or not.

we have ways of preventing clogging.

this is a treatment system. the overflow is last ditch scenario. (will be contaminated water)

The bottom pipe will discharge clean water.

If you need someone to sell it I'm your man. However, don't ask me to make it work.

Just tue the overflow in downstream of where the perforated ends. If you have enough water to overflow then the perforated piping is saturated anyway.

Or will overflow be non treated and need to return back to the source.

Just reread your post. Where will the overflow go to? Will it need to be treated or can it mix with the treated water?

Overflow will most likely discharge as untreated effluent

As of now anyway

Just tie them together. Set the over flow at whatever elevation is needed.

Your #2 or put a flapper valve on the overflow so it opens another flapper on the perforated bottom pipe. That way you can avoid sensors and shite

Probably the best scenario.
