If he's not way over that this year then he is average to say the least. I won't even think about killing a 125" deer, let them grow

Picture 500 acres of 25-30 year old pine with some oak flat and then snap them all off about 15’ up and twist all the tops up. Only thing I can compare it to was my buddies place near Tuscaloosa after the tornado

So you are losing the majority of the trees. Basically clear cutting the whole place in a couple months?

if you don’t t need the meat, let them walk. just enjoy nature and hope they make it thru the season.

should I kill them or let them walk?

a lot of good discussion going on here...
sounds like there is a good chance that buck can make some nice babies for the future...

if he walks...

Whole place has been clear cut except for about 80 acres that were too wet. Have 100 acres of young pine and some swamps

Then you should have enough cover/habitat to grow nice deer for a while. I would let him go. I thought you were worried about losing habitat and you were worried he would leave your property when they cleared everything.

Cutovers are about the best thing you can have for growing big/older deer.

Typical rule for is- if you will mount it kill it. If it’s not big enough to go on the wall let him walk. Some make it some don’t.

This is the rule we go by on our hunting land. It takes all the decision making criteria out. Either mount it or don’t shoot it

Well I let him walk, he came out about 15 min before dark and stuck around. He’s nice. Taller and more mass than I thought but not wide and not much tine length. Hope he makes it till next year.

Been a crazy year. I’ll see a buck on camera, go to that stand and like clock work he’ll show up. Never had a year like this before. It’s almost too easy

LSU’s offense and my deer hunting both having record years....makes me nervous

You need to talk to your neighbor/neighbors and get them to agree to some parameters on what to shoot or not.

We have a small 120 acre piece of land in North Central La, for years we were lucky to see a fork horn but we started a conglomerate with 7-8 landowners around us.

We are starting to get some 130's - 150's on camera which are huge deer for the area.

Trail cameras are the ruination of whitetail hunting. I wish they were banned from our property

My 2 cents based on also having neighbors who have never heard of QDM and a similar situation as yours - now is the time to dial back the pressure.

I hunt SW GA and if your season is anything like ours, the rut is over and bucks are seeking food sources hardcore. Fill up the feeders, drop some mineral blocks and only enter the woods to refill the corn and change SD cards. They aren’t chasing does anymore so if you don’t give them a reason to leave your property, they won’t.

There’s no guarantee you see that deer during daylight hours after another year of maturity under his belt but for me I’m usually willing to take that chance.

I agree with 257WBY, if you’ve already let this deer walk, you’ve made the decision.

I contemplated shooting a 3.5 year old 11 that probably scores 136-141 but I passed because he was a younger deer. He had a very tall rack and was beautiful but I decided to give him another year. If someone else shoots him, oh well. I am flush with meat and I’m not pulling the trigger unless I have an at least 5.5 year old step out
