I've spent a lot of time outdoors in LA, TX and OK, and somehow I've never seen a rattlesnake. Blows my mind honestly.

Ours got hit by a rattlesnake last year. And had to have 3 viles of antivenom. Got him right on the face.

According to the vet, the only time a dog will need antivenom is if it's a rattlesnake due to the different types of venom the common 3 have.

My bosses beagle got hit by a copperhead, no antivenom but was rough for a while with blood vessels popping and such internally. Probably what you have going on.

When I lived in Houston, my golden got hit twice by a copperhead, in the foot and in the muzzle. Found the snake under her doghouse. Called the Vet, and she said to use Benadryl, she was fine in less than 24 hours. Makes me think the snake bites in OP were something other than a copperhead.

Lets be clear, I never go looking for snakes. I hate those bastards. I honestly did not know there were that many down that way. I thought they started in abundance around Alexandria. At some point I fully expect to run up on one at our place at Toledo Bend. I will scream like a bitch and run.

Deeprig, I totally agree. Not all dogs need antivenom. Plasma infusions should help. I hope your dog rebounds and makes a quick recovery.

If you or your dog are going to get bit by a venomous snake in this are you want it to be a pygmy rattler or copperhead..... For some reason Canebrake/timber venom is nastiest on dogs... have never heard of a dog getting bit by a coral snake though. This does not sound like a copperhead bite.. .although copperheads are very active in suburbs right now with the cicada activity

Where are you seeing them? Are you just walking in the woods? What kind are you seeing?

I saw what I believe was a pygmy rattlesnake in my front yard near Weiner creek around 10 years ago.

most of the ones I see are when I am working my dogs - actually when I am checking out the edges of the woods where I'll be throwing dummies....

and some while Im working

We have a Mini Aussie that has been bitten twice by a copperhead. Once when when she was a few months old on the face and again just a month ago in the chest. First time we took her to the emergency vet and they kept her overnight, gave her antibiotics and anti-venom. Later found out from my regular vet that they don't usually do anti-venom for Copperheads. Second time, I gave her benadryl and kept her comfortable until the next morning. Took her to the vet first thing and they gave her antibiotics and more benadryl. She was pitiful for a few days but is now back to normal.

I'm thinking this probably wasn't a copperhead.

the viper venom was still active in he bloodstream so the antivenin and transfusion saved her life. none of this makes any sense to me but i will take it

wife is getting more bloodwork done on the little dog just in case.

now i have to address the fact that my wife wants to take a flamethrower to the yard and then asphalt it over
