two of my dogs got bitten late thursday nite. we knew the little dog got bitten so we took her to the emergency vet where the kept her overnight, she has a nasty wound on her leg but did not need antivenin and she's doing fine.

but when we got home from medvet that night we noticed our big dog had a swollen area under her neck, but no wound and no pain. we figured she must have gotten knicked so we gave her a benadryl and took her to the vet on friday. they looked her over and took some blood, and said she'd be fine, which she was all weekend. no pain and the swelling disappeared.

this morning the wife noticed her stool was black so she took her to the vet in BR. she's got no red blood cells being made and no platelets with internal bleeding...

so now she's in a race. they are giving her antivenin today and a plasma transfusion tomorrow. they are telling us if that doesn't work she's out of options.

i've seen plenty of snakebit dogs, never heard of anything like this. its been four days since the bite and now she's bleeding out?

anyone have any experience with this?

Our lab got hit by either a rattler or a copperhead yesterday afternoon and hes still at LSU vet school now. I wasnt there but apparentlty whatever it was left 2 2" gashes in his back leg and he was bleeding everywhere. ZHe had to get antivenom

East Baton Rouge Parish is shown to be Canebrake territory.

I had a dog bitten by a copperhead. I gave him 2 benadryls every 2 hours for 12 hours. He made out fine.

Dogs and even cats have more of a natural tolerance towards hemotoxix venoms.

It's possible, in my limited knowledge of the subject, that your dog had a less than normal resistance or even an allergy to the venom.

Was this the first time the big dog has been tagged?

yes

we did vaccinate her against rattlers years ago (my camp is rattler-infested) but not recently. she shows no adverse symptoms at all other than the internal bleeding. no lethargy, no pain, no wheezing, no swelling, no wound. perfectly normal

so i have one vet telling me on friday she's fine, and another one telling me today she'll die without treatment and there's no guarantee on that

Yep - even in parts on NOLA too

Venom is bad medicine

And grand I have a relative that is a vet in GA that sees a lot of canebrake and copperhead bites - and also sees a lot of delayed reactions like yours

The venom itself causes kidney and other organ issues when said organs are breaking down the protein i-

24 hours after the bite, the venom is no longer an issue. The issue is the damage done to the organs/ body and if the dog can overcome the damage long enough for their body to heal.

I understand they have them, but they can't be that plentiful, right? They may be but I have never heard of that in all the time I lived there.

I nursed a female GSP along for 2 months after being bitten by a cottonmouth. She spent 2 weeks at MedVet icu in Nola, she was slowly getting better. I came home one day and she has crashed. I don’t have an answer for you, but I am hoping for a full recovery.

Had a lab that got bit two separate time by a cottonmouth and lived to hunt another day. So I really don’t have any info other than when the wounds abscessed they were nasty.

I've seen coyotes and red foxes within blocks of LSU. Critters don't need much.

I’m just pissed that the vet on Friday blew me off and told me she was fine.
We were thinking the little dog got the worst of it and not worried about the big dog...

we will know something in the morning I guess

Regarding big dog- if they took blood on Friday and the cell counts were still in a relatively normal range, and didn't show anemia in the gums, then how is it the vet's fault the venom took its toll over the weekend? I understand being upset over the whole situation but temper your anger against the people trying to help your dogs. I truly sympathize with you, but don't direct your anger at the vet.

I've seen a fox in a drainage canal on LSUs campus. No doubt song dogs are there too. And those canals that drain into the lakes and Bayou Fontain have plenty of moccasins. Hell I caught a 3' gator on a topwater on sorority row fishing the lakes.

You're right when you say they dont need much.
