That stihl MS170 is a badass little saw and it's all I need for the random storm damage on 5 acres of mostly hardwoods.

OP, for infrequent use, stick with true fuel or the still brand of pre-mixed. I haven't had an issue with any small engine since I switched.

Anyone tried battery powered yet? Seems like a good idea for around the house. Tired of trying to keep seldom used engines running on various things.

I looked into it but the price for a good battery powered is pretty high. Use echo/shindawia red armor. Best oil for small engines I’ve ever used. Has a carb cleaner and it claims To stabilize fuel for 2 years. I run it with 93 octane with no ethenal. And all my weed eaters, backpack blower and chainsaws crank right away after sitting up for the winter. Also bought my MS310 used. It was running ok when I got it. After running the red armor for a little while it was running like it was new. It’s good stuff.

Stihl or echo should be only 2 brands you look at. First saw should be 16-18 inch in my
Opinion. The 24+ are nice and thats all i use now. Thats a lot of saw that will hurt you real quick if you havent had a lot of experience with a saw

Might also consider the ECHO CS 590 Timber Wolf with the 20” blade.

I got one this year. Little much saw for me but it will eat. Throws out wood chips that look like poker chips

I've owned McCullogh, Husqvarna, Poulan and others, I bought what is probably my last saw a STIHL and it runs circles around the others that I have owned.

I exclusively use BR industries fuel additive and have no problems with fuel storage over long periods of time. No ethanol problems either.

One suggestion for you since you are a chainsaw virgin, buy a second small limb saw and various wedges or borrow another saw from a friend. It takes a while to learn to "read" how a tree is going to react even once its on the ground. You are going to bind your saw several times and if you do it hard enough your going to need a second saw to get the pressure off of it. Without it your going to end up bending your bar that will ruin your day and it will get expensive.

Suspected this would turn into a Stihl circle jerk. They are nice saws. Might also consider the ECHO CS 590 Timber Wolf with the 20” blade. Can also put a 24” on it, if necessary.

Either brand will serve you well

I agree and the home owner $tihl products are not the best on the market. For anything up to 60cc or so in a home owner product Echo (from a dealer, not Home Depot) is a great choice.

For a professional product I think Husky is better.

As a former logger, Watch yourself closely taking on this task. There’s a bunch of things that can go wrong. Tree felling is very danderous.
I’ve witnessed a death, broken leg (permanent), a gaping cut across the thigh, a cut off finger, among others
When u run a saw. Better be at full attention and prepare for the unexpected.
Godspeed and good luck

How can you possibly dismiss Husqvarna out of hand?

Pretty much all loggers will be using Stihl or Husky. The pro level Stihl saws are even with the Huskys but the lower end stuff is not as solid. I would suggest a 450 Rancher BUT brand has a lot to do with what service you have near you.

While it is kinda useless facts for a new user Stihl saws have more low end grunt and the Huskys cut faster.

One other thought is since the OP has a friend in the biz I would buy the same brand he uses since he might be more able to help with advice for maintaining and servicing the saw.

My buddy recommended a Stihl 251 yesterday he said his 170 he pretty much only uses for small branches and what not...but I'm pretty sure he's just used to chewing through wood quickly. I agree safety is #1, I've ran plenty of power tools and heavy equipment before just never chainsaws.

I've got some gift cards to Lowes so I was considering an Echo, but it seems the consensus is to buy from a dealer and the big box store models are lower end?

Big box stores sell the same homeowner saws dealers do. Just not the pro line. I always buy from a dealer. If you need it worked on you will likely pay more to get it fixed and be at the bottom of the list. Dealers will take care of their customers more. Lowe’s sells husky I believe. I don’t think they sell echo. But if you know about chainsaws you can pretty much order anything for a stihl, husky or echo at baileysonline.com. They sell OEM and some quality aftermarket parts. Echo’s are ok but a step down from stihl and husky. Echo makes some great equipment but chainsaws aren’t their wheel house. They are improving from what I hear but not on the level as the other two.

Glad to know someone else was thinking what I was thinking.
47 trees on 1/2 acre with a house! No wonder you having grass problems. I can’t imagine how on earth the house is situated with that many trees many being mature.

Wow. Have fun and pick up one of the big three saws named and grab next size bigger.

In my opinion his only error was not dismissing echo too and ONLY recommend considering a stihl.
