Take a picture of the leaves if it has any. I have seen that tree many times, but since I only slept 2hrs last night, I am having a hard time going by the bark and branches

In the first pic you can kinda see the leaves covering the ground. They are a big broad leaf. Next time im out my office ill go back by there and see if I can find a solid one left that hasnt rotted away

I am gonna say Chinese Parasol tree - Firmiana simplex, but havent seen the full leaf yet. If you know what the leaf looks like, just search google images for Chinese Parasol tree

Here is a helpful hint......don't try and climb one. The branches snap off like rotten magnolia branches

If you look at that LSU link I posted, you should be able to see pictures bigger if you click on them

From wikipedia:

quote:

Recent publications mention the species as an aggressive and invasive weed in the warmer parts of North America. They urge its removal and give instructions for drastic measures, including destruction of nursery stock. The plant is self-fertile and its seeds spread readily, especially along watercourses, and they germinate and grow rapidly. They compete effectively, smothering many other species.

Due to its superior sonic properties, the wood is used for the soundboards of several Chinese instruments, including the guqin and guzheng.

May want to eliminate them asap.

Just like all other self-fertilizing trees, you have to cut around the base and spray chemicals.

Tallow tree is the perfect example

That's exactly what those are. Got them in my back yard, roots run and make another tree.

Neighbor has a large one that fell during Gustav and has regenerated into a bunch more. I dug up a couple of runners but they keep sneaking across the line. Anyone know how do kill them? Thought about cutting trunk and pouring pure roundup on the cut. Scared I might kill all the ones growing in my neighbors yard too.

That was just a wild guess man. I wrote a bunch of trees on my dry erase board, and threw a dart at it. Ended up hitting the correct tree. Now I have a dart in my GD board though

You have to get the correct chemicals for each tree, and do what they call "ringing" it, then spray. I have killed paper mulberry, which is similar in structure and leaf surface with 2-4D

Have them on my place, but still don't know the name. And yes, the leaves do get wider then 12".
