Started leasing about 70 acres in 2008 near the city limits. Have had great success and killed several nice deer that are now hanging on my wall. About 5 years ago, the landowner neighbor who has about 800 acres found out I was hunting his neighboring property. He has done several underhanded things to mess me up, including calling the sheriffs department and accusing me of trespassing and trying to have me arrested. (This didn’t amount to anything except being pulled over and having to confirm with my landowner I had a right to be there.)

Last year he built a high fence. I don’t like it and feel it’s unethical but recognize his right to do so. This year I’ve noticed seeing less and less deer. So today I walked the high fence/property line and discovered several one way gates. The deer can push the gate open and enter his property but it will not open back the other way. Each gate had deer tracks entering his property. My question, is this legal and if not what is my recourse? I called LAWLF this afternoon but the guy I need to talk to was not in. He will be back Monday. I will call back Monday. In the mean time I’d like to know what y’all think. Thanks in advance.

I really have no idea what the laws say, but it sounds like he built a really big deer trap and trapping deer is not ok.

Use your right to build a fence in front the gates.

That sounds very much illegal. I think in most states you are suppose to "compensate" the State for each deer you "keep" when you enclose your land with a high fence. Something like $300/deer.

I thought Louisiana required you to make sure there were no wild deer in the enclosure.

I would place money that he has game cams on every gate, and up and down the fence. However logging mess ups happen all the time, and a few trees may not fall where you wanted them too.

Since he built the fence anyway, that border seems like a great place for a four wheeler trail

Could stray dogs get in this one way fence?

Run it by the department and see what they say. Sounds like a sorry SOB neighbor. Why didn’t he just buy what you are leasing instead of putting money in a fence?

If you are on Hwy 34 south next to the guy that has the huge fireworks show every year, good luck.

I'm sure you do have to make sure there is no wild deer before the fence goes up.

Do you know if his entire property is high fenced or just the area that touches your 70 acres?

Fence in front of the gate. Easy.

That’s a very good question and I’m going to try to find that out today. If it’s not all the way around I’m sure that will be his excuse. But his property boarders mine on one side (where the fence and gates are), the Ouachita River on another and major residential neighborhoods on the other two sides. Reguardless of a high fence on all boarders he has then trapped.

You could use some t post and hog wire to block off the gates pretty easy and be legal as long as you stay on your side of the property, but be aware he will have game cameras up and he will have a counter move

I’d buy as many hogs as I could and then put them through the gates

Sounds like at this point the hunting has been ruined for you.. out of spite I'd do whatever I could to retaliate. No way in hell would I let him win..
