Yeah, I hear that. I don't need to run 70 mph but knowing you have it if needed is nice. I got. 70 with my old 225 without a load and 2 guys. That's fast in a fkn bay boat lol

Yes it is, but it is nice when you have to run from a storm.

Factoart warranty or handshake? Any service records? Imo would decarb prior to winding it out if it hasn’t run a lot lately. Can also flash and get 300 with 91 which may make it a +75 majek.

This happened to me a couple years back, my 225 OX66 blew 2 cylinders due to plugged injectors.
Went with a lightly used 250 SHO and never looked back. A used 250 SHO is not easy to find, but worth the wait if you find one in good shape. As a note, you can get a 200 or 225 SHO and have a company flash the ECU to make it a 250 or even a 300.

Well, I am really just thinking of a new one. I'll make my decision after the new year. Not gonna worry about it. If a motor is flashed, will it void the warranty assuming a new motor?

Jsmoke, I might be interested. If it's your money, which motor would you run?

the short answer is yes. The long answer is, there are ways around it.
If you are going new, then no, get the 250 and leave it alone, plenty power, more than my 225. I thought my hole shot would take a small step back when I went from 2 stroke to 4, but it actually improved, as did fuel economy at all RPM's.
Earlier this year there was a significant backlog on the 4.2L engines (SHO's included) from yami, hope they catch back up when you are ready.

Quick/dumb question about flashing as I am mechanically illiterate. I was told as long as it doesn't increase the RPMs it doesn't void the warranty. How does it make the boat go faster if the RPMs aren't increased?

I've been wondering about the difference from the Yammy to the Mercury.. Since jsmoke has experience running both. Which does he prefer and why?

Have run two dif 250 shos and I really like the mpg/mph, neither have had any problems. Run Merc Opti now and will stay Merc when repower happens. New Merc del is prob April or May and list price for awhile. Yams are similar to unicorns right now also.

Why the preference of the Merc?
Posted on 12/19/18 at 12:38 pm to KemoSabe65
I am not a huge fan of mercs. They run great when they work, but every merc power boat I've been on has had issues. 2 times resulting in 10+ hour rides in on 1 motor
Have had absolutely 0 issues in yammy powered boats, and I spend more hours on boats with yammy vs merc
Just my experience though. All motors can have issues eventually

By turning a bigger wheel at the same RPM. A 26p turning 6k will be faster than a 24

Get you a new SHO and don't look back. I know a bunch of people with the new mercury Pro XS motors that are having problems. The main one I've seen is the compressor going out that forces extra air into the intake.
I've always been a mercury guy but for anything over 60hp I would go Yamaha SHO.

Mine is flashed and I didn't raise or remove the limiter. I think that is key to the warranty along with having a good relationship with your mechanic. You need horsepower and RPM's to gain speed.
I flashed it at 10 hours, as soon as I broke it in. I ran a 27P bravo before the flash at 5800 for 71 MPH GPS. After the flash, same prop, I am on the limiter at 83 MPH GPS. Hell, I ran a 29 Pitch bravo, still can hit the limiter at 88 - 89 MPH GPS. I ran a heavily worked 29 Tempest over 90.
4 strokes are known for more torque. My holeshot is unreal and I haven't been beat out the hole yet. I know I am talking basshole and y'all are talking bay boats but just info for comparison.

Gotcha. Just turning a bigger prop and pushing more water at the same RPM. I din't know they would prop up. Thanks.

Felllas, i gotta question regarding motor maintenance. What all should I do annually? I just got a quote for $450 and that includes oil change, lower unit oil, spark plugs, and water pump. Is that a good price? 2008 4 stroke 150 Yamaha with 190 hours.
I’m not sure what all needs to be done since I purchased used, so I was looking to start fresh.
