at what age is it appropriate to give a girl a knife? The answer is: at the age when she asks for a knife. I am so proud. Any suggestions?

It will be handy to be nine versus ten afterwards.

I don't know what, but a lock back in pink is bound to be out there.

Spiderco Endura 4, FFG with VG-10 steel

She can also pick a fun color.

I like the blue.

For a kid that age, I'd get her anything that ain't cheap and wouldn't unintentionally open by itself. I would stay away from assisted openers too but that's just me.

My boys first knife (when he's old enough) is in my sock drawer- his great grandfather's old timer.

Delica might be better since it's a shorter blade and you can still get VG-10 and FFG.

Along with the color of choice.

I'd get her a cheap lockback.

Make sure she knows how to use it before she carries it.

What does she intend to use it for? Just something like a Case Trapper with a couple of blades, or would she rather have a Swiss Army something? I'd stay away from a lockback with a 9 year old. Of course girls are more mature than boys so she might be fine. I still have a couple of scars from my first knife. I think I was 6.

Get her a Swiss army knife. I had the one with the large blade and the small one, a can opener, and something else. Came with a toothpick and tweezers.

First time I cut myself open with a knife. Learned not to slide my finger down the blade to see if it was sharp

He will lose it. I cant tell you how many I lost or broke from using thing improperly when I was growing up.

I say go cheap. I'd pick up a fairly light lock blade that isn't too hard to unlock.

I have the Endura 4 in my collection. IMO that would be too much knife for a 9-year old whether it's a girl or boy. Spyderco produces some knives that are smaller than the Dragonfly, yet all of them are seriously sharp right out of the box.

Yep. I went through a pile of cheap Barlows and Old Timers and such as a little kid. Broke them, lost them, whatever.

Wait until he can hang on to one responsibly before giving him grandpa's knife.
