My friend is not a moron, is not stupid and I have known this family for years.
Valid excuses are:
Guns were used in a crime
Guns were stolen
Has a violent relationship with wife
He has bi polar disorder mixed with schizophrenia
He is a raging alcoholic and has had a bad history with violence when drunk
He is suicidal
Those are reasons in which I wouldn't call your friend a moron. Any other reason, he falls into moron category

I'll be 10 weeks on Monday. I'm beginning to think I could have conceived a child and attended the birth before I get my CC card

$550-650 on gunbroker from when I was trying to buy a few years ago. Maybe more if in as good of condition as you state.

Not reading 5 pages this late at night, but you said ALL his guns. You only describe ONE gun in the OP...

Start a 401K for the kids or go buy some US savings bonds for them.

What a weird thread.
Guy doesn't want his guns anymore, gives them to a friend - crucified.
Friend wants to donate fair value to charity - crucified.
WTF?
People have given me their guns before, and I didn't ask any questions, I just told I'd hold them for them if they ever wantedthem back. Sometimes they take one back, sometimes they don't. I think half my guns I got for free. I don't think any of the donors were stupid or anything, they justt didn't want the guns for whatever reason.
So to the OP, you should just go ahead and donate a couple grand to whatever charity, and keep your friends guns in case he should ever want one or all of them back.
Then make him donate money to charity.

Thank you WildT!
This was a Saturday night thread and maybe beverages had an impact.
I tried to talk him out of it but couldn't. He even thanked me for taking these guns. He said the guns were leaving his house that day. He said if he ever went hunting again he would borrow a gun. Since this happened, he went out and bought a BB/Pellet gun and is telling me the fun they have shooting at squirrels in the back yard.
