re: Multiple Suppressor Questions

Yeah maybe I said it wrong all I meant was if a bullet breaks the sound barrier you’re gonna hear the crack, suppressor or not. Others may not hear the crack depending on where they are relative to the bullet

I was about 500 yards from another stander shooting supressed 28 Nosler. It sounded like a .22.
That’s what I shoot. Handloaded 143gr bullet moving around 3,300fps. Shot a doe last year with my buddy sitting about the same distance away from me and he said the same thing. Sounded like somebody shot a 22.
A couple minutes after I shot her, I could see orange heading my way, almost directly in line with the doe. I had no clue anyone was past me because there were no atvs on the trail on my way in. Obviously I would’ve never pulled the trigger had I known that guy was not that far behind that deer. But anyway, he walked past her laying on the ground, then got to me and said “there’s a dead doe right back there”. I said yes sir, I shot her not long ago. He said “damn I never even heard you shoot”. I guess it was quieter than his footsteps lol

you'll still need ear pro if shooting supers suppressed
“Need” is subjective unless you’re an ear doctor.
My ears ring very easily due to years of shooting without hearing protection. But they don’t ring when I shoot my .308 suppressed with supersonic ammo.

Im no ear doctor but I will say subjectively that a .223 and ocm5 is very much hearing safe if you get the port pop down.

1. Can you explain the “trust” for the suppressor? I heard someone reference a “big trust”. Is there a cost associated with the “trust”?
You can get a trust that can “own” one or more NFA items, as the tax stamp ($200) will be registered to the trust. If you have a single trust with multiple items, to add a member to the trust, you have to have that new trustee do the paperwork and background check and fingerprints and it’s a nightmare. If you do one trust per NFA item it is much simpler, and you can add trustees just by printing a couple forms and getting the new trustee and primary trustee to sign the forms under a notary. That’s what I did. One trust per NFA item.
What does the trust represent? That the $200 was paid to the government.
What can the government do if you don’t pay the $200? Let’s say you make your own can and don’t do the paperwork and don’t get a tax stamp. Why, they can throw you in the slammer for 10 years… not for having an illegal weapon. No, they throw you in jail for 10 years for not paying $200. It’s stupid.
In January, now that the tax stamp is $0, it will be challenged and the entire NFA might be declared unconstitutional. Until then, you have do all the bullshite fingerprint and paperwork and trust and a form 4473, unless you want to be a badass and just start making cans yourself for the greater good of all of us. See, after you are arrested and they tear your life apart, they will have to convince a judge and jury that you should be thrown in jail for 10 years for not paying zero dollars. When it is thrown out and you are released “not guilty”, that will set the perfect precedent to get the NFA thrown into the shitter if it hadn’t been yet.

2. This is more of an ammo with suppressor question. If you use sub sonic ammo with a .308 with a suppressor will it put a good hole in the deer and leave a good blood trail?
A 308 subsonic is about as worthless as tits on a boar. You just as soon do a 300 Blackout… same size bullet, same speed, more optimized for subsonic and good hunting ammo is available for it. It will poke a hole through and through and you will have to trail the deer like you’d shot it with a bow. 100 yard limit on taking a shot.
You’d be better off with regular 308 hunting ammo, good for 300++ yard shots. The can will make it hearing safe, meaning no ear muffs or ear plugs when shooting.
If you want to do subsonic deer hunting though, I’d urge you to consider 458 Socom. 600 grains at 1100fps. (Instead of 180 grains at 1100fps of the 300 Blackout). You can probably make ethical kills from 200 yards with this set up but you’d have to practice and get a range finder.

If you do not mind me asking, what did you get? I’ll be looking to get one for a .308.
Just depends on what application you plan on using your suppressor for. Box blind, range shooting, tripod stand. It all makes a difference in how easy it is to get on target.
I have a PTR Vent 1, it’s unbelievable, but it’s a 9” can and tough to get in and out of the windows in my Sportsman Condos.
I also have a Dead Air Nomad Ti that’s 7” and it’s really good too, just not as good. The Nomad is much easier to hunt with in most of my stands.

Several guys have said this, but I'll say it differently. When you shoot a gun unsuppressed, you hear two explosions. One is the round exploding in the chamber, and the other is the sound barrier being broken. The silencer deadens the explosion in the chamber. The sound of the sound barrier breaking IMO sounds like a loud noise off in the distance. I shoot my .308 silenced without hearing protection when I shoot.

I’m starting to get this shite figured out as I go through and play with the different ones I have. I prefer the short cans for my longer barrel rifles.
I think one of the next cans I buy will be a full size, lightest, with the best suppressing rating I can find. Started with a primal .46 cal and the length was fine on a 16 inch but that’s been moved to my PCC.

Reflex cans like the AB raptor is where its at. The extra volume behind the muzzle doesnt get you the same sound suppression as the volume and baffles infront the muzzle, but it does change the tone a lot. You get the performance of a huge can without having a huge can hanging off the muzzle.
Im hoping that with further deregulation we start seeing more reflex options on the market.

Check out the Hyperion, I think that checks most of those boxes. Love mine, I could demonstrate it on one of those Nilgai y'all have running around down there

PTR Vent 1 is my next can. I think it may have the best rating for .308 supersonic according to pew science.

I’ve got the Hyperion K and the Hyperion was my number 1 until the PTR came out.

I have Gunwerks 8IGHT Titanium on the way, I was down to choosing between it and the Vent for my next full size one. The 8ight is a little lighter but just splinting hairs on that. Plan to put it on my Springfield and keep the Hyperion on my AR10, it seems to like it although it is louder on it than the Springfield which was expected.

Do you have a link that would explain the process you used for the trust ?

Silencer shop dot com…
Buy the suppressor and the trust. Go to a LGS with a silencer shop kiosk and have your credit card and phone ready and they’ll walk you through the process and take your fingerprints and mugshot. You’ll be in there maybe 30-45 minutes. Maybe there’s a better way but that’s what I do.
They will email you the trust in a PDF file. Print it, and read and follow the directions.

I’ve bought 4 using the kiosk, but I used my LGS that files electronically to file for my 5th. The submission process was much faster. They submitted the next day after purchase versus a 2 - 4 week wait to submit when using the SS kiosk.
If you got the non-kiosk route and want a trust, you’ll have to get the trust paperwork notarized.

Question for the experts here - if I have a .45, 9 mm, and a .22 pistols that all have threaded barrels can I use one suppressor for all of them?

You can but don't. A .22 is very dirty and you want a silencer made for a .22 for them. They’re easier to take apart and clean.

Look for a 46 cal can for the 9mm, 45 and one for the .22.
