We took 10 days to drive from Louisiana to Alaska, and could have extended it longer. The drive was amazing, had two younger daughters (5 and 7) and they loved it. I drove about 700 miles the first couple of days and then went about 350 miles a day afterwards.

I dont like being around a big pack of coyotes at night. Idk if you'd catch me outdoors in Alaska without a rifle

JBER is awesome, got to go on base with a buddy who ran the C-17 simulator and he let us take a spin in it. Awesome experience.
1. When it warms up stay outside it’s daylight damn near 24 hrs a day. Make the most of it.
2. Fish, hunt, and fish some more. Hit the salmon run on the Russian River. It will be an awesome experience. Grizzlies are literally across a stream from you while you fish.
3. Black out curtains. You’ll need them during the spring snd summer.
4 travel during your free time. Alaska is a big arse state. See as much of it as you can.

Get a copy of milepost it has just about everything you need to know for driving around the state. The level of detail and it’s accuracy can’t be stated enough. Driving the Dalton and Denali highways are incredible. The north slope feels like a different planet at times.

In the 3 yrs I was there this wasn't needed. A battery warmer yes but not one for the block.

Really? I would have thought that was needed for sure. I was told you better have one if you live on the boarder of Canada, so why wouldn’t you need one there?

It does but still the temps have to damn cold consistently
I was too; I had a block heater installed before I got there and never used it. I ended up cutting the electrical cord with the plug.

I wouldn't want a diesel anywhere without a block heater. The damn things take forever to warm up when it's in the 30's much less the teens. Itll start and run down to a little below zero with winter fuel and no heaters but might never warm up.

Aye - I never needed a block heater, not even when it got down to -30. You do get heat out of the vents sooner though. I ended up plugging in for that reason alone.

We always had a garage to pull our vehicles into so never had to worry about the vehicle not starting.
We also had auto start on all of our vehicles and when it did get cold every once in awhile at work, we would just auto start the truck every once in awhile.
When we moved from anchorage to the bush we got a battery blanket. Truck already had an oil pan heater I stalled when we bought it.

They're not bad in the Anchorage bowl. When you get to areas with permafrost, you get the mosquito problem.
