Get some mukluks
Check army/military surplus stores and try to find bunny boots for your family (some people call them micky mouse boots). Nothing beats them in cold weather. They are hard to find here, expensive, and the quality of what you find usually isn't that great. I can get them back in MS for $40.

You’ll need winter tires for much of the year

Nokian Hakkapekiitta 10s are the best. The studs will help with ice.
Predators are bigger and more aggressive in Alaska. And that’s true of the Black Bears too. They’re not as dangerous as Grizzlies, but they will stalk you.
Always carry a gun in the wilderness, but also be careful on the edge of developed areas. Bears may come in to find food.
Alyeska Resort is a short drive from Anchorage. It gets good snowfall but it’s close to the ocean which means warm air. As a result the resort sees inconsistent and mixed conditions, good snow up top, and poorer, icier snow, at the bottom

I never really liked the bunny boots but then again I didn't work on the flight line (those guys wore them all the time).
I wore the mukluks all winter and never needed anything else.
If they can find either one at army/military surplus stores BUY THEM!!!

It's right on the edge of Prince William Sound which has some of the highest snowfalls in the world. That entire Girdwood/Portage/Whittier area is really cool.
Valdez averages over 300" of snowfall at sea level and has some awesome heli-skiing..

The scenery on the drive from Anchorage to Valdez is outstanding.

Wrangell St. Elias, ALsek-Tatshinshini, Glacier Bay and Kluane all form the worlds largest UNESCO heritage site, which has some of the best scenery in the world. Particularly along the coast.

...it’s a 4,000 mile drive from Shreveport hahaha
Here is the route I took (met PCS standards at the time for collecting per diem each day). Stayed overnight in each of the location on the right for each night. Stayed at La Quinta's in most locations as they had a good pet policy for rooms.
Denham Springs -> Ft. Worth Texas
Ft. Worth -> Dumas, Tx (just north of Amarillo)
Dumas, TX -> Denver, Colorado
Denver, Co -> Jackson Hole, Wyoming (stayed weekend there)
Jackson Hole, Wyoming -> Boise, ID
Boise, ID -> Eugene, Oregon
Eugene, OR -> Bellingham, WA.
From Bellingham, took the ferry to Haines, AK. (takes about two days, highly recommend the trip, it's beautiful)
Haines, AK -> Haines Junction, Canada. (there is a good cheap hotel catacorner from this burger shop that has really good Bison burgers).
Haines Junction -> Tok, AK (Stayed at Fast Eddies Hotel/Restaurant)
Tok, AK -> Anchorage, AK.
All in all, took about two weeks to travel. Didn't feel rushed at all.

I carry a .338 win mag. Big enough to feel comfortable around bears, can also take goat and deer with it.
I have a .308 that I use for downing pretty much anything out here. My hunting buddy goes with me with his .338 so really don't worry about anything like that

I don’t know what the min/max per day is for PCS but I’d do the max till the Denver area and then near the min through the west (within reason). Schedule the ferry sooner rather than later. I expect it will fill up fast with limited cruises this year. I think the ferry has already been scaled back a few years back because of budgets.
When I say “the min through the west”, I’m just saying to take extra time to enjoy this section of the trip. It might be a once in a lifetime experience.

Urmy or Air Force? MOS/AFSC?
I've been three times. Get a good plan on paper for what you want to do during the summer, it goes quick, but you have a lot more daylight. I love it, tons to see and do.
College football fans love Alaska, you can watch all the games and still have time left in the day.

don't bother carrying any sidearm smaller than a .45 ACP. Grizzly bears won't go down with a 9mm.
A .45 ACP isn't enough for a grizzly either. I wouldn't carry anything less than a 10mm.

There have been people stop them with a 9mm, but your margin for error slims quite a bit when you're talking the big bears.

Used to work for the ferry system in JNU. It's a mess. I wouldn't trust them with reservations right now. I took another job 14 months ago because of the direction the Ferry system was headed.
