I’ve never hit one. Come close a few times. Damn near hit a 250lber in Kansas, and put an fellow OBer passenger sitting in the driver seat into the windshield/dash. He was cussing at me till he saw the deer.

I was under the impression that to file an insurance claim that a police report was preferred, but I could be off on that.

Nah, I hit one in my 6-month old 04 Z71, no police report, comp claim. $6k in '05 dollars. Big, fat, buck with no horns, looked like a big fat doe with cock n nuts.

I think the reason you're not supposed to pick them up is because people will run over them on purpose. But if one tears up my truck, be damned if I'm not going to at least eat it.

the most damage i had was a buck (nice 7 pt) smashed my grill into 3 pcs. by that time the truck was 3 yrs old and i had dropped the insurance coverage down. i only was able to save the tenderloins.
the first one was a doe that ran out in front of me and i ran over her head only.
the second one was a spike that smashed my passenger side head light with its rear end. most of him was eaten.
when i hunted in texas the old ranchers all had some HEAVY DUTY front bumpers with drill pipe welded to them and wouldn't slow down for anything.

I'd stage a hilarious long arm picture of just my fricked up truck with the deer like it was my son's first buck, and then put the mount on the wall with the picture framed next to it.

Anyone who says otherwise has never had a deer jump in front of their vehicle and mess it up.

You may as well get something good and funny out of the deal.

I just don't get how its somehow more respectful to kill one from a box stand in a field than it is accidentally with a half ton pickup.

If I kill one with a truck thats bigger than whats currently on my wall, I'm mounting him.

"Yeah that one, I shot him during the rut came in trailing a doe and let that ol .243 sing baw... and that one, well I was going up Hwy61 and he came out of nowhere, did $5800 dollars in damage"

"So I had his skin and antlers turned into a stuffed animal and the rest turned into chili."

Agreed. I'm perfectly okay with that.

Yea I’d mount it. Between my office or camp I’d find a place to hang a nice buck

I’m not a big fan of euro mounts. Always reminds me of the trashy rednecks with them tattooed on their arm

I know plenty of people who have hit deer and the police have all said you can take it.

And they will in turn report it WLF... Who will then wait an hour or so for you to clean it and show up at your house to confiscate it.

I usually give it to the officer writing the report, unless it's eating size.

Then I don't tell a soul.

Eta: what if you beat a buck to death with a crescent wrench after you knock him down with your car and he decides to charge you while you're checking damage?

Can you mount him?

I'd mount just the horns on the plaque with a Chevy bow-tie underneath
Pretty sure it was a Chevy, seeing as it couldn't stop or maneuver around the deer.

There are an insane amount of deer wrecks in my area. Have always given them to the driver if they wanted it. Use to keep my ice bags from the Twice the Ice machines and a skinning knife with me. If the driver didn’t want it I’d at least take the back straps out, put them in the bag and bring them home

We've got a nice 10 hanging at the duck camp.

On way home, after killing 1 mallard, a doe dashes out in front of truck. "Damn, we almost hit that deer!" Sitting at stop sign 20 foot up the road, 10 point nails the boat we were pulling.

Killed 1 duck, and 1 buck.

It's nothing to do with respect. If I'm hunting, then I'm actively trying to kill a deer. I can be proud of any deer I choose to shoot. Any good buck I kill is likely far more luck than skill, but it's still a goal I'm trying to accomplish. If I'm driving and accidentally hit one with my truck, why would I be proud of an accident?

Not the officers.

Dispatch. Feel like I wasn't clear there.

The deputies all either want the deer or want you to take it.
