Sounds like a blast. Nice find on the Victory, hope it doesn't take much to get it running. I had a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 for a while. That thing had ridiculous power and was super comfortable to ride on long trips. Enjoy the time with your dad.

Go time!

Tale of the tape -

Dad's bike: 2005 Honda Spirit - 749cc 47ft/lbs torque - chain driven 5 speed - 496lbs - 3.6 gal tank - 53mpg

Odds of making it - 90%

My bike: 1999 Victory V92c - 1507cc 76ft.lbs torque - belt driven 5 speed - 635lbs - 5 gal tank - 42mpg

Odds of making it - 70%

Both of us about even at $2700 spent so far - $300 to make 2400 miles. Leaving tomorrow.

Nice! Best of luck and have a safe trip! Do you plan to spend some time around the rally while up there? If so I'd suggest not spending much time at the rally crap and instead spending more time riding around the area, it's absolutely beautiful there. If you've been to one motorcycle rally then you've been to them all, they're all the same, dickbags in bedazzled jeans, cheap T shirts, leathers, and helmets, and a ton of ugly women.

We went to Sturgis a few years ago and the best part was getting out of town to do other things, Mount Rushmore was great, we rode Needles Highway, rode out to Devils Tower in Wyoming, went through the Black Hills National Forrest and a few other odd and end areas around there.

Not into the rally thing, honestly. Plan to get to Rushmore. Take a day to look around. Maybe ride to Crazy Horse Monument and Devils Tower.

There is a low mile Honda 750 ACE sitting in my garage. Windshield. Saddle bags. Mustang seat. Would probably run great with a good scrubbing

I’d love to hear more

Day 1 - Leaving San Antonio.

Front was a godsend. Cooler and dryer for the run west then north. Big Vic came into her own - bigger twin cruised at “highway” speeds and flipped the mpg advantage over the smaller Honda. Turns out the Honda’s speedo was “optimistic” to the tune of about 10mph and cruising at 70+ drove the mileage down into the low 40s. Still runs like a GD sowing machine and I’m upping the odds of it making it to 95%.

Made it to Lamar, Colorado - 722 miles - just enough rain in north Texas to make it interesting. Hwy 287 through the Oklahoma panhandle should be avoided at all costs - it’s like they don’t even try to keep it paved. Shook the bikes enough to keep us busy Wednesday night tightening bolts. Busted the filament in the Vic’s taillight ($1.17 to fix - still in budget!).

Dad’s holding up like the friggin’ Honda. Hoping I got his old age genes.

Day 2 - The Good Stuff.

Eastern Colorado and Nebraska are undersold. Wide open grasslands, rolling hills, good roads. It smells even better. Got a tad sketchy as the population disappears and the little Honda runs out of gas at 120 miles. Offered Dad a bungee cord a couple times as a joke to tow him in. Made it to Hot Springs, South Dakota when the clutch cable on the Vic snapped.

Knowing I had an American ‘99 made me pack certain parts based on what could derail our quest. The Bartlett clutch cable that arrived Monday morning before we left suddenly made me look like a genius. 40 minutes later - we were back on the road. Honorable mention - at least three groups stopped while we were fixing the Vic and asked if they could help. Faith in humanity lost in spending time on the Poli Board restored...

Made it to Hill City, South Dakota. At the hotel. Showered, sore and hungry. 14 miles from Mount Rushmore. Looks like both are going to make it.

Custer state park is worth the look while you are in the area. Also, black hills burger and bun co in Custer is very good.
Awesome adventure!

as I'm sure others have told you as well, but what you are doing is nothing short of amazing. kudos man. to even think up such a plan with your dad, and then execute it is awesome. love reading about this brother. safe travels to y'all. although i will say, makes me feel like a schmuck for not doing something like this with my dad when he was still here... hopefully those that have the opportunity will gain inspiration and ideas from your stories

I've spent some time in that part of the world and you really need to go to downtown Deadwood SD. There is a ride you can take from Deadwood to Spearfish the is beautiful and on a bike would be even better. IIRC it goes through Maitland. Anyone there can give you directions. Make sure you see the model trains in Deadwood.

Also make sure you go through the Badlands National Park, it is a sight to behold for sure. A couple of pics from Badlands.

EDIT; I just checked and Sturgis starts today so it's going to be real crowded anywhere within 100 miles of there. Good Luck is all I can say.
