Made the switch to braid this year and haven't added a leader. I normally use this rod/reel for crankbaits and spinners. If I put braid on my worm rod should I be using a leader? This is my second year bass fishing so I'm still learning

Not unless the water is really clear. Straight braid for worms and spinnerbait. I use mono for crankbaits except traps. However, as you can see from my outing today I have no idea what I am doing.

What's your preferred method of attaching mono to braid?

Yes, I'm on YouTube watching this as well lol

Flourocarbon leader for me for most baits that sink. 15lb test. I usually keep it about 6-7ft in length, which keeps the knot in between the reel and the first guide from the reel. Double uni knot.

Mono for topwater lures and from a popping cork. I find my hookup ratio with trout is better with the mono bc it has more stretch and won’t rip it out of their mouths on hooksets.

I hate leaders. I’m a straight line guy. I use mono for spinnerbaits and topwater plugs. Fluorocarbon for crankbaits, jerkbaits, and some soft plastics. Braid for heavy flipping jigs, punching, frogs, etc.

Like others have said, most of the water we fish around here is stained up, tannic, or muddy. Unless you’re fishing gin clear water, a leader isn’t necessary.

ETA: Carolina rig is the only exception for me. Then I use 50# braid - barrel swivel - 20# fluorocarbon leader.

Crazy Alberto Knot

By far the best braid to Fluoro or braid to mono knot!

Double uni. I really like the durability of fluoro. Doesn't knick like braid would if rubbed against something.

Using a leader will save your braid as well since it won’t get all knicked up. When your leader is done, cut it and tie on another one. The uni to uni knot takes like a minute to tie.

Lacassine is probably the clearest water ive ever bass fished in, and we used straight braid. Use a sharpie to color the line when it gets faded. Caught a bunch of bass there with braid. If youre fishing somewhere crystal clear, then maybe use a leader, but here in LA, you dont need a leader.

Full disclosure: ive only been bass fishing for a year, and im not very good at it yet.

Smaller stuff (bass fishing) use the double uni knot.

Bigger stuff (offshore) go with the FG knot.

I caught a 42” black drum on my trout rod today which has a uni knot between 20 pound braid and 15 pound fluoro leader.

i dont use braid but as i understand it the knots tend to want to slip so adding a mono leader makes it easier to have sure knots you can depend on.

as far as i know thats the whole thing is the knots holding

Almost always use a 20# or 8# fluoro leader unless fishing frogs, punching, or flipping heavy cover

so many factors, but if the fish are hungry it really doesn't matter.

I use fluoro on spinnerbait, crankbait, swimjigs, dropshot

braid punching, flipping, chatterbait, buzzbait, frog, whopper plopper

braid with 14lb fluoro leader wacky rig senkos, flukes

mono only thing left is rattletrap, spook jr, rogue

and it also depends on your rod setup. You don't want a stiff heavy rod with braid to fish say a spinnerbait. You want something that gives the fish time to eat the bait before your hook set reaches the bait.

I used to waste my time with leaders, but now I go straight to braid. I lose less lures (hooks bend before line breaks) and it's one less thing to worry about.
