Pic heavy post incoming.

My 16 year old son and I went on a weekend paddle trip in the Upper Mobile Delta. I had been in there before and camped at the Jug Lake platform and also the Dead Lake platforms. This was my son's first time. We put in at Rice Creek Landing and paddled to the Jug Lake platform and camped overnight. Saw a gator on the way in. Woke up the next morning and paddled through Bayou Jessamine to the Indian Mounds which are hard to find because there's no signs. You have to find them using GPS coordinates. The trailhead is in the middle of the bend on Bottle Creek. We paddled all the way back to Rice Creek Landing that same day. Saw two more gators on the way back. Wore us both out but had a good time. It's so different there then up here in Central Alabama.

Damn that looks like a fun trip. Can’t wait for my children to get older so I can do it with them. Great pics.

Do you reserve the platforms ahead of time, or are they first come first served?

Yes, you reserve a platform on the website below. I was surprised that no one else was in the Delta this weekend when the weather and water levels were perfect.

Edited to include the Alabama Canoe Trail main website. I forgot about the Perdido River trail. I haven't been on that one yet just the Bartram trail.

A whole bunch of outdoorsmen in the Deep South are deer hunting right now.
Awesome trip. Memories made for the rest of your lives.

Was wondering the same. Sure would suck to get all the way there and it be occupied...

Cool trip OP. Looks like a great time.

Paddle back from the Indian mounds to Rice Creek landing was about 2 hours IIRC. We left the Indian mounds about 11:40 am and pulled out of Rice Creek at 2 pm on the nose. Going to the mounds was harder than coming out because the water level was higher early that morning and so we had to squeeze under several trees that have fell over Bayou Jessamine. Coming back the water had dropped so we cleared them easier.

Did a trip to the Indian mounds 15 years ago or so. You are absolutely correct about it being hard to find. We had a crappy map I had in a ziplock bag and was looking for a “beach” as it was described on the map to pull out take out at and find the trailhead. We paddled past the trailhead for 45 min when I told my buddy we must have past it. I then guessed that the beach was a bunch of water reeds at a bend on the river. I was right. As soon as we pulled our yaks out snakes went off in every direction. I hate snakes. The short hike to the mounds we saw them everywhere. The mounds were neat but overall underwhelming. Was a small hill like feature in a swamp that was covered in hardwood trees. Had a small sign about an archeological dig being done by university of South Alabama. The walk back to the yaks was more of a run as we passed more snakes on the trail and on both sides. I’ll never forget that trip. Exhausting. Swamp was gorgeous. Mounds were meh. Snakes were a bit much. It’s been long enough that I would do it again if ever able to though. My son is 8 though. Got a few more years.
