Databook

Not sure how many of you have ever seen this. Data is collected from the HIP survey you are required to fill out each season.

Here's some more data as well:

Activity and Harvest

2019 50000 LA hunter killed 572400 ducks

2020 38200 LA hunters killed 752200 ducks

I guess we are all idiots on here, there is less pressure not more and there is more ducks not less.

I would have thought more people hunted because of COVID.

Sad thing about the HIP certifications, I've witnessed a cashier manipulate the application just to speed up the check out line in a popular sporting goods store. I believe they are (or have) revamped the HIP process. I question the legitimatcy of past data.

When I was younger and dumber I would always put down that I killed some Rails and Gallinules, even though I really didn’t. So I wouldn’t trust the Rail and Gallinule count

I would think only 50% of the people fill that out correctly

2020 Pintail: 17,904
Proud to say one of those was mine

These surveys are a decent estimate. I doubt many people bs it with waterfowl. There are probably more ducks killed than recorded because I know people who just put zero to fill it out faster. That's a big decline in hunter numbers from 2019 to 2020. Good share.

Hip is grossly inaccurate due to hunters not being accurate with their harvest data(purposely and not) as well as the cashiers not taking the time to ask the questions. This has been acknowledged by the people that put it in place as well as reinforced by statisticians. Throw any and all of that data straight into the trash.

HIP is stupid and not even close to being accurate. How many baws are going to say they didn't kill anything the year before??? Hell, half of the written surveys have, "geaux tigahs" or "Obama is to blame" written somewhere on there.

I just filled one out for an Arkansas License last night. The only choice is a drop down that is less than 10 ducks or more than 10 ducks.

People see woodcock on the HIP data and confuse them with woodducks

Hip IS NOT used for kill data, baws.

HIP is used in the kill survey estimate process, however.

edited twice.

Almost all survey's have this fault. How can anyone complain about the lack of recognition in duck shortages fill out a survey with false information?

I'm sure LDWF is all ears if you have a better way to gather the data.

My vote is duck tags, one tag per bird.

Here's another bit of data that I found to give a bit of perspective to hunting pressure.

Public Acres per Person to Hunt

Straight from USFWS waterfowl harvest page:

"Questions asked during HIP registration about how many birds you harvested the previous year help make sure we send surveys to the right people...so that, for example, we send most of our dove surveys to people who hunt doves, rather than to waterfowl hunters."

Correct. The surveys are sent out based on the information received from HIP.

We may be headed this way with the new electronic tagging system.

HIP is a joke and a misnomer

Those numbers change drastically based on a hunter that kills 10 or 360 ducks, yet the survey would show them the same. Add to that the fact that every state requires the survey and doesn't ask how many you killed in that state.

Yeh the LDWF website said that retailers weren't consistently doing it right and its free to get on their website on you account.

ETA: at least that is what I remember when I went to get it. Also, it asks about the last year. Is that asking about the prior season or the current season and they are wanting you to fill it out at the end of the season?
