Same reasons why these gates -Red River lock #1 have been inoperable for years
They told my father "it only makes a couple inches difference upstream no matter how long the water backs up". My opinion there are some million dollar homes in Shreveport that beg to differ.
Gates up- open
Gates down- closed
2 of the middle gates, which is the natural channel, are closed & still closed because they are broke.

Right now the forecast is 4 feet lower than 2011 where our camp is north of Onward. Anything above 2011 and the lodge floods.

How does the "spillway" west of Simmesport/Melville/Krotz ever get involved?
The spillway west of Simmesport, Mellville, Krotz Springs, etc. would be used in the event that there was potential for major flooding along the Bayou Des Glaises area due to the Red River or Atchafalaya. If the levee along Bayou Des Glaises would fail most of Avoyelles Parish would be flooded as in the case of 1927. There is a section of levee what they call the Bayou Des Glaises fuse plug that lies roughly along old Hwy 1 that would either be blown up or breeched with machinery allowing the water to flow southward. This would relieve pressure from the levees along the Red, Atchafalaya, and Bayou Des Glaises. If this spillway is ever used the shite has really hit the fan.

Interesting. I was a 13 year old kid back in 1973 and I remember everything along US 71 was flooded, both east and west of the highway all the way up to LeBeau and probably further north.
Thousands and thousands of acres of farmland were under deep water for months. That spring of 1973 those fields were full of crawfish. There were so many crossing the road they were creating a traffic hazard on US 71.

Always cool to hear stories like that from the past for someone young like myself

The dry weather has been a sure enough blessing. We have a couple weather events in the next week, but it's looks like they will get over fast. River is still going to get high, but barring a failure we should be good. Looks like sleet & snow about the time the Mississippi River will crest. That will make it harder to keep an eye on the levees. I feel a hell of a lot better now than I did 7-10 days ago.
I'll be at the meeting in Morganza & give a update on what is said.

I hunt in Maringouin and our farmer told us today we need to pull our seacans and gear out of the fields. He said his property floods when the Atchafalaya hits 20' at Butte Larose and he said he's got it on good authority it'll hit that within 2 weeks. Bummer. Duck season over, but that's small potatoes compared to what the property owners are facing. Hope damage is minimal and everyone stays safe. He did say we could come shoot all the hogs we want when they start scurrying out of the woods.

Word is they will start opening on the 14th. This came from levee board official warning me to get belongs out. Supposedly a soft opening but we will see.

They can't get crop insurance in the spillways. How did they make out like bandits?
Or are talking about outside the levees?

both -
don't know how they did - just remember hearing them say they wish it would open more often.

Guess i am going get the go-devil and shell buckets....
