General statement:
On BC:
On Morganza:
quote:
While the flood fight continues in the upper reaches of the MR&T footprint, we are somewhat in a hold and monitor phase with regard to the potential activation of the Bonnet Carré and Morganza spillways.
On BC:
quote:
Based on NWS forecasts we are facing a likely operation of the structure in the near future, though at this time the date is hard to pinpoint. The trigger could be reached as early as this weekend or get pushed back into early next week. We should have a firm grip on this by the time of your meeting on Thursday. As of yet, we have not received an official recommendation to operate the structure from the New Orleans District commander.
On Morganza:
quote:
If NWS forecasts hold, the river will approach the triggers for opening the structure sometime next week. We have a visit scheduled to the Morganza structure as part of your meeting on Thursday. At this point, we do not anticipate an official recommendation for operating the structure prior to your visit, though a shift in the NWS forecast could change that.

Please one of you go to Morganza with a camera if/when the first gate(s) open.
Here's some pictures from 2011.

What I posted was from an email yesterday after a meeting with a bunch of officials and Edwards. It could open Monday, but that's not been decided.

They are opening the gates on the fore bay Monday at Morganza.
Eta- I'll always put ( I believe or I think) if it's a or my opinion.

I apologize if that came off wrong. It's hard to express intent texting.

I have been told the levee along the Mississippi south of Vidalia is shutting down on Friday. 3 Rivers WMA will be very hard to access.

Yes & l'm very happy they made the decision before the meeting tonight in Morganza. What purpose is a shareholder meeting without any info.

The spillway west of Simmesport, Mellville, Krotz Springs, etc. would be used in the event that there was potential for major flooding along the Bayou Des Glaises area due to the Red River or Atchafalaya. If the levee along Bayou Des Glaises would fail most of Avoyelles Parish would be flooded as in the case of 1927. There is a section of levee what they call the Bayou Des Glaises fuse plug that lies roughly along old Hwy 1 that would either be blown up or breeched with machinery allowing the water to flow southward. This would relieve pressure from the levees along the Red, Atchafalaya, and Bayou Des Glaises. If this spillway is ever used the shite has really hit the fan.
I actually had one part wrong about this. The levee would not have to be breached or blown up for water to come down the spillway. The fuse plug levee is shorter than the adjacent levees and the water would flow over it naturally without it having to be compromised.

Yeah it is lower, but it would have to be a flood of biblical proportions before they would use this spillway. It would flood everything from Simmesport to Hamburg in between the levees.
