My wife has some outstanding show poodles. Some of these are natural retrievers. She has been trying to get me to train one of these so she can go to the line at some akc hunt test with a poodle. I am about to break down and do it. I need to get a bird boy to throw some pigeons. Kemo are you available?

If you were still in Laffy I would meet ya half way. Exactly what are you going to do with it after she ditches the dress up party???
Too bad FT is only open to retrievers, derby/Q poodle girl would love it.
Keep me posted

My cousin from the outer banks has a half poodle and she will go retrieve a brick out of the marsh.

First one up is a 2 year old white male. He is a retrieving maniac. Already started obedience and hold. I have started only a few dogs this old but he is also very smart and is really wanting to work for me. I will probably start a pup out of the next litter and train the more conventional way. If I can get a poodle or 2 to the senior level my wife would be excited. She’s only looking for junior level now.

Poodles were originally duck dogs. The breed predates Labs. I ain't ever hunted around one but I know folks use them and they have a good reputation. If I had to choose between a poodle and a chessie I'd go with a poodle everytime….but thankfully there are black lab females in the world so I won't ever be faced with that decision....

I don't know why you would say that. They're great swimmers and their coat is ideal for insulation in cold water.

I wrote it because its true...Poodles were originally bread as gun dogs and were specifically used as duck dogs in Europe....I've never known anyone who owned a poodle who didn't like water....my sister had one when we were kids and that thing loved water as much as any Lab. I am sure they have lost some of that DNA over time with breeding for show and simple pets but they are supposed to make very good duck dogs. The same can be said for Labs....there is a WORLD of difference between a dog from gun stock and one from pet / show breeding...they can be trained but it takes more effort generally speaking. I think it'd be cool to see more of the many different breeds of dogs that were initially duck dogs being used today to hunt...I got a buddy who is a world class pointer trainer...folks travel from all over the world to work with him and he has won so many trials I am afraid the walls of his office may collapse some day...and his wife has a Jack Russell Terrier they've trained to hunt over and the little bastard is as good as any pointer I have ever hunted over.....and that's a terrier, as far as I know he ain't got any bird hunting in his DNA....I'd think a poodle would make a great retriever....and I'd love to see one work in person!

I thought my follow up statements made it clear that I was being facetious.

As a breed, poodles are objectively smarter than all but the border collie (at least on some scales), marking them ahead of the other "smart" herding and terrier breeds.

Webbed feet, essentially a woolen coat, an above average work drive (certainly for a non-working group), and that intelligence makes them ideal retrievers/gun dogs, probably more so than any other variety (including those known mainly for that task).

Poodles are fast, too, much faster than Labs or Goldens.

I missed it!

I'd bet poodles have stamina on par with an English pointer, especially compared to the huge chested British Labs most breeders are producing in the US. I know my 5 year old female Lab will work all day in a blind but after about 5 hours of upland hunting she and I both need a nap, some whiskey and a good cigar! She is a beautiful beast but she ain't built for speed or distance LOL...not that I am either....

They could do it too!

Side story. Friend has a tall, long legged majestic poodle. It is smart as can be. Takes commands easily and follows them. They caught him waving his snout over the sensor on electric garbage can lid. He was feasting on stuff in there when it opened up and not leaving a trace of anything on the floor. He lingered one time and got caught. Friend wondered why the garbage was filling up as.often as in the past.

And yet the FT drama queens won't let them compete against their big black labs. It's like they are an innercity charter school that won't let the asian kids attend for fear of making the other kids look dumb. Hell I just want to see a silver lab compete.

Pudelhund. There is a doctor on the Northshore that does retrieving competitions with his standard poodle. Smartest dog I have ever been around.

While I believe ppro can build a poodle retrieving machine, he will also tell you they can’t play the big game successfully. Just because they can’t doesn’t mean they’re worth less in the field. After all, ppro was once a top breeder of brown dogs in Louisiana.
There are competitors and participants, any silver colored dogs will only be participating when the marks go down.

I have said this before my dumbest poodle is smarter than my smartest lab. That said there is more to playing the field trial game. Taking politics out of the equation drive and determination are just as important as brains. I have no idea yet how much drive and determination we have in our poodles. We will find out. Back to the politics. All these competitive dog games have a political component and conformation is no different from field trials. If I get serious about this I will train with others and let y’all know if poodles stack up to labs. For now I say they don’t in that arena because while poodles are retrievers by heart they are not field trial retrievers. There is a big difference.

do it. we sent both of ours to one of the best bird dog trainers in the state for obedience training and they came out exceptionally well. Almost too well, in fact (they were like robots and we had to untrain certain things so they'd have some personality)

Our female is a retrieving machine and I know she'd kill it in the field once she got used to guns. Any time we're on the couch, she is trotting up with a ball and resting it on our laps to throw to her. Sleeps with the ball, carries it around with her everywhere, etc

Lots of people laugh at poodles, but I don't think I'll ever get another breed. The intelligence, personalities, athleticism, and lack of shedding are just too great a combo

I agree about all the qualities you mentioned. I kinda wish I had some of these back in the day. I will start my force fetch as soon as my collar comes in. I don’t use a traditional force that most of the pros use but more of a taught fetch reinforced with the collar. I know the dogs can do this I just hope I have the drive. If I can get a good hold and fetch instilled I think I can get back to my old training schedule

I 100% want to see you show up at a competition with that dog, complete with the hair puff grooming and shaved butt and all, and WRECK those other dogs. You should be dressed like all the other guys there. The white French poodle should be the only thing that looks out of place.

Hold the phone sideways when you film it.
