I'm starting to look at metal buildings to put up this spring and I'm looking for any tips and lessons learned from the board. I'm especially interested in any unique features, accessories, and design ideas that you have or have seen that I should incorporate.

I'm looking at 30x40 to 30x40, which is at least twice as big as I need, a lesson already learned.

Thanks for any tips.

Eta: it will be used for a little of everything:storage for hunting/sporting gear etc., a place to work on projects and some woodworking, occasional work on my Jeep, place for dad to get away, etc.

Will it be a garage, or part living space? We are getting closer to finishing the interior of ours at the camp. I'd definitely recommend having an decent overhang on whatever side has the roll up door

I'm thinking of extending the slab to give the kids a place to play basketball sure I have a gravel driveway, so the overhang works.

That looks nice

Got a loft. It's 30x40. Half garage, half living

depending on steel prices it may be cheaper to build it pole barn style and then sheet it. be careful when shopping buildings for sheeting and roofing gauges, steel member sizes and freight charges

also if you go metal bldg I recommend you hire a professional to install the grade beams/slab and anchor bolts

also, when designing, keep it square/rectangle with a single roof level

Thanks, I was going to look into pole barn vs full Metal and I'm not doing the work.

I was planning on calling Mallett for a pole barn quote and I'm looking for any suggestions for a metal bldg contractor in Lafayette for comparison.

I know a ton of commercial guys (it's my job) but no residential contractors. In breaux bridge my main guy is Picard steel, ask for tony eden. He can at least give you a quote but they will want to furnish and install

Put in a bigger garage door than you think you will need.

Spec it out for a bifold door. You can go wider and cheaper with a bifold. Don't use metal halide lights. Go with led high bays or at least t-5 lighting.

I'd go standing seam roof panel over R-panel (screw down) all day long. Once roof panels are sealed properly, it will not leak. The only reason standing seam roofs leak is due to penetrations caused by others.

You can also look at incorporating sun strips in the roof panels that allow natural sun light in.

What are your plans for ventilation? Will you have an exterior louver with exhaust fan, cross ventilation by way of overhead doors, or have a conditioned PEB with heat/ air? You will need to know this to determine the insulation factor of your building. It is much more cost effective to install roof and wall insulation now, rather than later.

Will you have a bathroom or shower in the building? If so, make sure the building supplier knows this up front. They will need to properly space the primary steel components to your needs. The same goes for overhead doors that you desire.

Also, make sure your erector is reputable and will meet your schedule once the building is fabricated and shipping. Most of these small guys are week to week and jump ship for the next best thing that comes along. Your 1,000 SF building will get pushed back for them to erect a larger one elsewhere.

Air compressor in closet outside, don't put it inside in case you leave it on and it lights on fire.

Waste oil heaters are also nice. We have a Black Gold in our shop. 10 yrs old and zero problems. We get all of our oil from local John Deere dealer for free.

Thanks for this kind of information and things to consider. I want to have a sink inside and out, but a bathroom is a nice addition.

Are you putting in boats also. 30x40 sounds big, but believe me it fills up quick. After a couple boats, lawn equipment, workbench, freezer, ice machine, icebox, and bathroom. Its done.

definitely need a floor drain. thats the biggest thing i got missing from mine.

Extended covered slab with a gas line for boiling, fish cleaning, etc.

I'd love to build one from scratch. I got so many ideas now trying to work with the one i have. i would go no less than 40x60.
