Countless times on TV I've seen the host or hunter stop a moving deer by saying the "Meh!" word. Always wondered if it actually worked so last season I tried it out on a couple spikes I wasn't going to shoot just to test it out. Both took off like I had just shot the starter pistol in the 100 meter dash. Not exactly confidence boosting.

Well, yesterday morning about 0730 I had an 8 point walk directly under me from behind me and continue walking dead straight away from me. Kept waiting for him to turn but he stayed straight as a string. Figuring I had nothing to lose I let out a "Meh!" and, sure enough he stopped and turned enough to get a shot.

Does anyone else use the "Meh" and what's your success ratio?

yes, it's more like my version of a doe "mew/bleet" form my mouth though. every single time I've done it they froze in their tracks. Never had one bolt on me.

younger bucks may clear out of the area if they have had a bad encounter with older bucks making that sound while with does, older bucks will stop and try to locate the sound of competing buck...

I’ve done it countless times, but last year I had a big nanny walk under me while bow hunting and she jumped straight up and took off blowing and raising hell. I was so pissed.

Son yelled at a buck crossing road 200 yards away. The buck stopped long enough for him to get a kill shot.
Grunt calls also work.

I swallow air and let out a loud burp mouth slightly opened that resembles a young grunt sound. Have never had one spook. Have stopped dozens of deer. Randomly was sitting on my stand early one evening about 3pm practicing my said call. Trying to get the volume down on how hard to burp it and how open to crack my mouth. Had probably done it about 7 maybe 8 times in 2 minutes time. A young 6 point strutted out looking my direction, neck swole, hair on end and pissed off snort whizzing off an on thru the woods for 10 minutes. It was a site to see. I knew then I was doing something right and have mimicked that for 20 + years now.

Use it all the time. I do more of a 'Uuuurp' type of grunt like a deer grunt, goat, etc.

You want it to sound like an animal grunt or sound, not like some flat bill hat baw commenting on an OT 4's butt.

Eta: any more natural noise works, I have cow 'mooo'd' before and that works, just usually deeper noises. What doesn't seem to work is more human sounds like are higher pitched although I've seen a whistle stop a deer.

Have been doing this for longer then I can remember and never had a deer spook nor have I had them come to me using just a “meh”. It does normally get them to turn towards me briefly which gives me time to judge if I’m going to take them. Have had success calling by mouth mixing up a meh and biiiip if you will with bucks. During the rut a solid HEYYY is about the only thing I’ve found to stop them when they’re on a mission.

Have done it several times and never had them not stop for a look. I don't think the actual sound really matters, just something short. I know I've let out a few that sounded real odd after I had been sitting in silence for hours and probably needed to clear my throat.

I've seen a whistle get a big buck to stop and turn. I imagine sounds in general will make them curious.

Video says it all.

I have stopped them with the bleat sound as well as just a "Hey".
