You don't mention budget so for a cheap set up I would go with a Daiwa BG 5000 and Shimano Trevala S in Medium heavy. If budget is higher go with a Sargossa

I've been thinking about a more heavy duty rig for Mangrove, Cobia, and occasional vacation surf fishing.

Will probably go with

5000 or 6000 size Shimano Spinning
8' Heavy - Shimano Teramar or Falcon Coastal

The gear now is so lightweight, I'd step up to something you could also jig blackfin with. So a 7000 size reel and a 50-80lb jigging rod. If you're never gonna use it for that, then stepping down to the 5000-6000 size spinfisher and a 15-30lb inshore rod or 20-50lb jigging rod would be great.

6500 spin fisher on a heavy action rod to horse them out of structure. 100pound power pro and some 30-40lb fluorocarbon.

Usually a calcutta 200 with 30lb power pro and a 7' heavy rod.

It's perfect for mangrove and has pulled a 6' shark next to the boat before.

I bring my wacky-worm/trout cork rig. 20ish pound braid to 12/15lb fluoro.

This is very close to my setup. I would go lighter rather than heavier equipment. I’ve used big rods that are meant for tuna and AJs and you end up missing a lot of fish because there is no give in the equipment.
My larger trout rods with 30 braid have done well, minus the occasional big boy that will break you off.

Thanks guys. My current setups are 7500 - 8000 spinning reels on jigging rods. Trying to come up with something lighter. Maybe a 4-5000 size reel

My friend/guide in Florida is always amazed at how effective my bass stuff is. It led him to carrying a few lighter rigs on his boat.

To be fair, mangroves chummed out of wrecks in FL require different tackle than horsing them out of rigs in LA. I've fished both and agree with your previous suggestions for florida. I've caught shallow water grouper there on beefed up inshore gear. But around rigs out of LA, I prefer heavier tackle because the 5lb+ mangos mean business.

Bass spinning set up with 35lb braid Carolina rig to 30lb floro with shrimp for bait. Catch 100times better at night.
