Need to get a a new small saw and the Husqvarna I was going to get his sold out. Are echoes worth a damn? and I see that Makita makes chainsaw now but I don't know anything about them.

Any recommendations on a brand for light to Mid Duty

Stihl is always my suggestion. I've spent time on stihl, husqvarna, dolmar, echo, pouland, and probably some others that I can't remember.

I really don't like any of the husqvarnas I've used and two were $1000 professional rigs.

I've ran an echo for a while, not sure what model but it had a 20" bar. I don't remember not liking anything about it. Their engines are good.

Really any of them will do just fine. Dolmar makes a hell of a great value in a chainsaw, but I don't know anyone who carries them around me.

Echo's are fine saws, Makitas are basically rebadged Dolmar saws and are very good saws. I'd get whichever offered the best price.

Echo. But Stihl over everything. My dad is a logger and that's all he's runs.

I used to be a loyal Stihl customer until my chainsaw wasn't working and I borrowed an Echo. I loved the Echo, and now I only purchase Echo.

Depending on size the Makita (or Dolmar) is built in Germany or Japan/China. They are fine saws and every bit the quality of anyone else on the market but their service centers or distributors are very limited hence their parts are mail order only for me.

Damn I didn't know that. No way I'd be scared of a Makita in that case.

The dolmar I used to use was heavy but it had rediculous power and always started. That thing was a monster. If somebody around here sold them I'd think hard about getting one.

I have a Makita that I bought used off of craigslist. Maybe a 6401 is the model number. Saw is a complete beast but it is pretty heavy. It's a rebadged dolmer like mentioned before. Probably best purchase I have ever made.

The Makita 6400 is the most trouble free and reliable saw I have but I run stihl because of parts availability.

Ps: if you get a 6400 or 6401, replacing the stock 64cc piston/cylinder with a 79cc is super easy/ cheap and you will have a beast of a saw.

I have both a Makita and Stihl.
The Makita is lighter duty with a 17" blade and both are good quality saws.
Bought it new online about 8 years ago and the engine is very responsive.
What I like about it is the way the vibrations are dampened and not transmitted through the handles.

I agree on the Stihl being the cream of the crop.

Can't go wrong with a Stihl. In the case of chainsaws you get what you pay for. Echo makes good equipment, but If I'm biting the bullet, I buy a stihl.

Between those 2, echo all day. Depending on the echo model it could be a toss with a stihl. I have 2 of the commercial grade echos i got during katrina. Still crank on second pull. Zero maintenance unless you count fuel stabilizer added to fuel mix.

If it is for professional daily use, get a Stihl. For personal use Echo will give you plenty of bang for your buck.

I'd buy a makita just out of nostalgia for that old monster arse dolmar I used to run. That thing was an incredible saw. Not as comfortable or user friendly as the Stihls I have now, but shite it was powerful and reliable.

Echo all day. Recently borrowed a Stihl chainsaw and just wasn't impressed with it. Returned it and went to buy an Echo CS 590 20". Thing starts on second pull and has no quit in it. Not trashing Stigl's just have a preference for the Echo. You like what you like....

Just comparing makita vs stihl/echo...seems like the makita is heavy as hell.

18" makita - 14.1lbs
18" echo - 10.1

Both residential models, but that's a big difference for a skinny fella like myself lol.

Eta- maybe the makita is medium duty. Seeing some lighter ones online

Dolmar/Makita saws are heavy, but what is the power/weight comparison between those two?
