Anyone do magnet fishing? Reading the reviews on Amazon, it seems many magnets don't pick up nearly the weight they are rated for. Any recs and tips on magnet fishing?

Don't go less than a 100# one.
I have this one now LINK
It wont pull up a bike or grocery cart, but a gun or glasses shouldn't be a problem.

Learned that the hard way when my dad dropped my keys at the boat ramp. I had a 10# one that I kept on the boat and never tried to use until then. Wasn't worth a crap. Luckily the guy that builds docks on the lake lived close and he has on on his barge for dropped tools.

Also its a good idea to have something of decent size in the keyring that is actually magentic, all I had was the snap rings

I thought about buying half a dozen 16" bar magnets from Harbor Freight just to frick around. They're like $4/ea and easily hold a claw hammer

Expectations are low but would be interesting way to kill time between runs on the crab nets

Never, EVER thought about getting one...until now bc this is easier than swimming with the gators to get something I dropped in the water.

My dad lost a camera in an irrigation (aka fishin') pond a few years back. I always said I was going to find it, but a couple years passed. I bought a magnet off Amazon during COVID, and went to work with it. The first time out, I had no success, but decided to go back a second time and on the first toss, I felt it connect. The dang camera came up, and the battery/memory compartment was watertight. I popped the stick into my laptop, and all the photos were there!

I keep the magnet in my truck, and every now and then the kids and I will stop at a bridge, hoping to find a murder weapon or something, but mostly finding fishing lures and junk.

I think if you purposely went to places to hunt for stuff, you'd have good success. Lots of stuff on youtube.

I bought one off Amazon. Keep it in my tool box in my boat. Haven’t used it yet, but if I need it , it will be a life saver.

Watch a YouTube guy that does it. DALLMYD its called. He dives in city rivers and where people go tubbing stuff like that. He does magnet fishing sometimes. Usually by bridges people fish off of or just random ones. Found an old arse artillery shell once also. I swear he finds a gun in almost every video.

These would be a bad idea under salt water bridges I’m assuming due to all the bridge rubble and stuff under them? I’d think there’d be a good chance to get stuck on some steal in concrete? I suppose the salt water degrades metal also so the lifespan would be short.

Ha, yeah. The channels that magnet fish are always finding guns and knives and other stuff. Dallymd is one out of Columbus, GA, where they have plenty of the above and lots of bridges and places to search.

My $800 dive watch took a splash getting the boat into the boat lift a few months back. Went that night to Harbor Freight and grabbed a "100lb" magnet, and spent the night dragging it in the area I know it sunk. Jokes on me since automatic watches don't have any magnetic parts since it'd affect the movement. But now I have a magnet for when I lose other expensive stuff

My son got me one for Christmas. I still need to get a good rope before I try it out. I lost my truck keys last summer, but that was 1.3 hour drive away. I don't know when I will go back to that place.

If I found the keys, I would need a chip and get it programed.

I keep mine in my boat now for reasons like that and primarily more minor ones. It might be a waste of space 99% of the time, but if I drop a chatterbait or jig over board at least it'll reimburse me for the $10 magnet haha

For mine I went and got a standard 3/8in boating rope and a marine winch hook. The magnet I got from Harbor Freight was the 150lb strip one and has a ring on the top to attach the rope/hook to

Just a reminder...any flesh between some of these super strong magnets and metal will be damaged. It can hurt. A lot.
