Great video my buddy made the other day. These woods are some of the most alluring in the state for upland hunting.

He sent me that video a little bit ago, it is a great video. He has spent a ton of time working for habitat improvement,

I actually had no idea woodcock inhabited such terrain...I have mostly seen them in wet hardwoood flats in my area.

A few days back, I was driving at dusk and saw a number of birds crossing the highway....thought about Wick and wondered if he has been doing any hunting.

ETA: tell your friend that I did enjoy the video....very nicely put together!

Some, but the hunting has been tough this year. Lots of my spots on public land went underwater and the woodcock migrated like the ducks this year...

Hunting season was a huge bust overall for me this year. Ducks were terrible and woodcock were slim pickings. Should've turned to deer hunting.

Awesome! I emailed that video to my dad. He's got a couple of Brittanys in Alexandria and loves woodcock and quail hunting. That's tough hunting too. We mostly hunt in thickets though where it's not usually a very easy shot.

WLF made a bunch of woodcock habitat in Dewey W. Wills WMA, but it's so thick you can't walk through it. Great for the deer population though.

Wondering if any of you have hunted the woodcock habitat area on Sherburne? I drove by it the other day and it looked pretty thick.

Most of the woodcock hunters in the area hunt there from time to time. The birds have been declining there for the last 10+ years and it was past time for habitat work. The property was past its maturity point for being useful for woodcock, so LDWF went in last summer and clearcut the 250 acres and will be separating it into 3 separate properties in different ages of growth over the next couple of years.

Soooooo, that means in the next several years it can only get better? Is that how that works. I've never hunted woodcock, but have always heard about how well they taste.

Yes, the habitat work should increase the woodcock use in the area.

Do they have plans to thin more in the lil bama area? I was in there over the weekend and there's a pretty big section with blue blazes on a lot of the trees

I have not heard anything about that area, but I know there was a lot of cutting in Greentree last year. I was told that the biologist had tried for years to cut and thin, but the property was owned by the Corps and every time they asked, they were told that they probably would not be able to do any cutting on the land, and if the Corps did decide to allow the biologist to cut then it would require lots of expensive permits. Then the new administration took over and cutting was cool again, so LDWF jumped on it.

Where was that video shot? That place looks like the way things used to be in St. Tammany Parish with the pine savannas.
