Los Suenous, Coast Rica- Roosterfish
Posted by M4LSU on 6/11/18 at 2:27 pm11
I'm going back to Coast Rica this winter and plan to fish for Roosterfish one of the days. Has anyone fished/ caught roosterfish out of Los Suenos/ Jaco area? Looking for chapter info, tips, etc. Going Feb./ March time.

Nope, but that is one fish that I will target before I die. Such a cool looking fish.

I just went in April, but fished out of Quepos (easy drive South), while we were staying in Manuel Antonio. If you're just going to fish (or partake in the other...uh, things) then Jaco/Los Suenos is probably the better choice. If you want to do other stuff (hiking, sight seeing, etc) I'd look hard at Manuel antonio. It's awesome and much more of what you expect for CR. We also stayed a couple nights in Jaco and it wasn't my favorite.
I'm no help on charters from Los Seunos, but roosters are great. They had been at the top of my list for years. I'll be going back for them again for sure. Could catch more in other places, but I loved CR too much.

I've roosterfished a few times out of Los Suenos. Couple of things that are slightly counter intuitive about fishing for roosters:
1. They are generally less plentiful than sailfish.
2. For some boats, the price of going out for Roosters is the same as going out for Marlin and Sails.
3. Live Bait is absolutely key. If you don't have live bait (and the right kind of live bait), then you're in for a pretty long day.
4. Quepos has what I believe to be better roosterfishing, but the fleet of boats is nowhere near as nice. (I went out of Quepos for $500 less than out of Los Suenos. Hooked up to 8 and landed 1. The gear we were using wasn't very good, but the action was non-stop). I went out for a full day out of Los Suenos in March and caught all Jacks, no roosters.
If you're serious about catching a rooster, I recommend Capt. MJ Allgood or any of the Maverick Boats (Sea Fly is my Favorite). Be VERY clear with whomever you book with, though. If they can't find the right live bait, just go out for Sailfish. More action and about the same price.
Good luck.

I just pass los suenos entrance (to the beach at the end of the road) then negotiate with the locals hanging out. A panga for rooster can be had for a 100 to 150 mil CRC a half day. But, knowing spanish helps.
They make bait in the bay, then go slow troll and throw a popper at the rocks. Its hit or miss.

If you aren’t stuck on CR, there are plenty of them in Cabo.

This.
The name of the beach is Playa Herradura.
Make the short drive down there the day before you want to fish because ideally, you want to arrange to go out early the next morning.
Ask for a captain that they call Carne Seca! I have fished several times with him and his "almost twin" brother.
Also, one of the restaurants there, El Pelicano, is very good.
Buena suerte y pura vida!

speckledawg, my boys and I were in Manuel Antoine at the end of March and didn’t have too much trouble finding good nightlife. Loved the area we stayed, and eating the fish we caught that day cooked in local restaurants was a real treat. OP I can help with the charters if you opt for the Quepos area. Costa Rica as a whole is amazing. Definitely on the list of potential retirement spots for me.

Headed to that area in January. What does a typical charter for sails and/or roosters cost?

We paid $500/full-day for roosters out Quepos. That includes everything +beer.

I could go back and never even leave the Manuel Antonio area. That was my favorite part of our trip.

yeah Quepos over Jaco gets my vote any day....we stayed in Manuel Antonio/Quepos area for our honeymoon.
as far as Roosters in Los Suenos, look up Maverick Sportfishing. They have a big shop in the marina in Los Suenos. They have many big boats in there charter for marlin and sails and have caught rooster on them, but the owner also shipped down a completely re-fitted old Kenner 23 and they use that boat for rock fishing the coast line for roosters. Thats the boat you want!
Like others have said....if you want to go to Cabo and not CR, plenty of Roosters there. I caught my personal best Rooster beach fishing down there w a guide....Cabo Surf Casters. It was an awesome trip!

We always fished with Costa Rica Dreams. We fished on the Dreams-II. Plenty big enough since you're so close to land. You can see the mountains in the background pretty much the whole time. We caught 15+ sailfish each day and a few dolphin. The crew was awesome and worked non-stop.

You should make it over to Montezuma some time. Epic waterfall hikes, amazing old growth reserve, Mal Pais surfing...super chill place. It's as good as CR gets. I enjoyed MA as well.

Definitely on the radar for next time. We stayed mostly on the other side, but take a day trip out to Isla Tortuga.
