looking to buy my first gun

I'm not really a hunter, but I figure that now that I will be living in a home where I can have one, getting one wouldn't be a bad idea (I'll be living in Capitol Heights in BR).
I do enjoy target shooting, as does my SO, and I have the ability to go shooting at my parents' property on the weekends.
What are some brands I should certainly look at? What's going to get me the best value?

You are going to need to narrow it down a little: handgun, rifle, shotgun, budget...

Pistol?
Shotgun?
Rifle?
Need more information to make a recommendation. Don't get tunnel vision on a specific manufacturer until you decide what you are wanting out of the gun.

Rifle, shotgun, handgun?
I would suggest buying at least 4-5 of each.

I'm leaning towards hand-gun, but I'm open to suggestions on shotguns and rifles. I'm definitely looking to save money since I'm just a few months out of school.

Go for the best. Ed Brown baby.

.357 double action revolver in stainless
You can also shoot low powered .38 rounds.

Get an AK. Very simple to operate. Chimps and children use them regularly.

Understand though that handguns, rifles, and shotguns are very different platforms and mainly require different skillsets to operate proficiently.

Ruger SR9 is going to be your best bet.
Avoid anything Taurus like the plague.
If you look at a gun and it's less than $300, it's a POS.

Keltec pf9 and sccy cpx2 are under 300, and they aren't pos.

I already know how to shoot and have been doing so on friends' weapons for years. I'd just like to get my own.
I'm proficient with all of them, probably best with pistols.
It hurts that I'm right handed and left eye dominant.

Rifle: Ruger 10/22
Shotgun: Remington 870
Pistol: too many choices here, try out as many as you can and pick the one that feels right and has good reviews
Revolver: Something S&W
You'll spend more on ammo than for the gun, so if you have a small budget go with something in .22LR.

And we need to narrow down handguns even more. Is this something you want to mainly target shoot with and keep in the house for protection? Would you ever get a permit and carry? Do you prefer revovlers or semi-autos?
Target and home protection go with a classic revolver in .357 and shoot .38 for practice.
If you're going to carry, go with something a little smaller and lighter, like a XD-SC or one of the newer XD Compacts, or a Glock. HK USP is another good one. A buddy of mine has one that I love shooting. And then we get into the caliber wars. I prefer the .40 but one of these days I'm going to pick up a .45ACP either in a 1911 platform or in something Polymer.
If you strictly want something fun to shoot with and nothing else, get a .22. Look for an older Ruger MKII or a Browning Buckmark. If you were closer I'd offer to sell you my Ruger MKII. I just don't shoot it that often.

Me too. I'm almost legally blind in my right eye. I HONESTLY believe it's more natural to use the opposite eye vs hand. Maybe it's because I'm used to it, but I actually like it.
I'm a super good shot for my somewhere between 1k-2k shots through all of my pistol shooting ever.
I LOVE my springfield XD-40 and my Beretta 92fs. just fwiw. sorry, at work or i'd give you a LOT more to consider here. most of these guys give great advise on this topic. :)
budget will really be the tale of your outcome...
most of the arguments will be
1. budget
2. wheel gun vs automatic
3. sub compact vs compact vs full size
4. which caliber to choose and why
5. purpose for the particular gun you're buying (fun / daily carry)
6. prob some more stuff i could come up with, but i'm at work and really can't chime in more now.

For target shooting I find two things to be the most fun:
A Henry lever action .22 rifle
Or
A big arse handgun
Something like a ruger Blackhawk is a good first gun. They're easy to shoot well, very durable, priced reasonably, etc.
Plenty of options out there. It's all in what appeals to you. If I could only have one gun to waste ammo with for the rest of my life, it'd be an open sighted lever action .22
