I've looked at several brands and read the negative reviews of each but have no idea which one to go with; Diawa, Okuma, Kast King, etc.

Need Recs for reel or reel/rod combo.

Gonna use it for specks.

TIA

What's your budget?

Daiwa BG and fuego are popular around $100-125.

Shimano Nasci and Miravel are similarly priced shimano offerings.

If you want to step up in price, there are lots of other options depending on your budget. I'd hesitate to go under $100 for regular saltwater use.

I am a huge fan of Shimano Spinning reels. NASCI through Stradic price points are all great reels.

Last year I picked up some Okuma rod and reel packages and have been really impressed. I like them a lot. Okuma ITX 2500 reels and Okuma DTR spinning rods.

ITX 2500 $85 Midway has them discounted for $85 right now.

Agree. Saltwater is bad on budget equipment. I have some cheapo spinning reels, but they only get used when I'm fishing for channel cats with a #4 treble and Stubbys Cheese it (no weight).

Will be used for freshwater only. I know Diawa and Shimano (I have baitcasters made by both) make good/great reels but wanted personal use experience on 2000 series specifically.

Key question.

BG is a very good reel.

I have an older Daiwa Procyon that has been my go to saltwater reel for 10 years now. No maintenance, been dunked a few times as well. Most I have ever done is oil and rinse with fresh water. Love it so much, I bought a new one 2 years ago that is my new favorite. Dont see this model get mentioned much but it is a fantastic reel. Usually runs from $125-150.

I am generally a Daiwa fanboy, but I took a chance on a Cadence reels when they were on sale, and have been very impressed.

Daiwa BG is hard to beat. The Fuego LT is as smooth as many high dollar reels and comes with Magseal. That will probably be my next spinner.

You got some splainin to do...

Shimano is always the answer for me. Even their cheapest models have held up better than a bit more expensive models from other brands in my experience. Everyone has their flavor, but can't go wrong with Shimano.

I think some people might refer to crappie/sacalait as "specks"

on the gulf coast we call speckled trout "specks". Fish are called different things regionally. Some people on the East Coast call redfish "channel bass".

*I thought OP was talking about inshore fishing as well.

True enough and I used to be Shimano only as well. You owe it to yourself to check out the comparable Daiwas next time. I did and my last 4 reel purchases have been Daiwa.

Oh.

If you're looking for a sac-au-lait reel, the Daiwa legalis LT is a great option. I have it in a couple different sizes, including the 2000, and really like it for a sub-$100 reel. MSRP is $79.99 but I routinely see it for $69 and sometimes $59.

For sub-$100 reels, just pick your price point and pick the Daiwa at that pricepoint IMO

I figured that's what he meant, but wanted to give him a little crap, considering the majority of this board is on the Gulf Coast.

I have fished with a Penn Battle II (still available as is the new III) in the marsh for years. It is a great reel and very durable; I recommend the 2500 series. You can team this with a Penn Battalion medium spinning rod ( 8 - 15 llbs.) You can get this for about $250.

Here it is....I'm a baw just not a Cajun

Yes I refer to them as specks or speckled perch and sometimes crappie.

Budget - I only invest in my fishing gear so if it costs me a few more dollars but will last, then I'm good.

I don't mind people giving me shite about anything as most of us on this board do from time to time.

There's a guy on youtube who reviews all things ultra-light, and he always has great things to say about them. Pretty sure I have at least two-can't keep track of all my spinning gear anymore.

I have 3 of the old White Shimano Stradics. They're 15 years old or more and still in great shape.
2 are 2000 and one is a 4000 (if I remember correctly). They have been used a lot in saltwater and also in fresh.

The longevity on them is impressive to say the least.
