since we're talking about pan fishing I've found the cheap shimano carbon body reels you find at Walmart in the plastic hanging on a hook for less than $30 work great...

I don't typically do any casting and reeling so the reel is just to hold line...
money is in the rod...
I tie the crappie jigs I use...

these work fine for what I do panfishing

I use my junk reels for reds. Nicer for bass. Best stuff for perches. It's what I do the most, so I was butter smooth retrieve and that's what you get with Daiwa.

Got a relative that just bought two similar to those. Magreel I think? They were 15 bucks each. Said they had over 700 reviews on Amazon and were rated at 4 1/2 stars...lol. Told him good luck with that stuff.
