I want to get into long range shooting. I would like to know some of your thoughts on caliber selection. I have researched some but not a lot. I know the 6.5 Creedmore is very popular but I am looking for a rifle that will still have plenty of knock down power at long range. Not looking to bye a Lapua or anything that large.

What are some thoughts?

Thanks!

I do fairly well with the 6.5 Grendel. Do you want something that big?

If 6.5 doesn’t have the knockdown power you want I mean 7 mag or rum or 300 winmag

Go watch tiborasaurusrex videos on YouTube. Quite an intro to long range shooting for free. Great video on selecting caliber for different uses in the earlier vids. Easy to understand examples.

I just found that and that is actually a very in depth series. I may start that today.

I think the first thing you have to do is define what "long range" means to you. Some people consider 300 yards to be long range. Others may be thinking 1000 yards.

If you are thinking 600 to 1000 yards, and you are still concerned about knock down power, then what are you wanting to knock down? Knocking down a prong horn antelope at 600 yards is one thing. Knocking down a bull elk at 600 yards is a whole different discussion.

Is this a target gun or a hunting rifle?

Whats the budget?

For hunting, I like my 300 WBY magnum. My cutoff is 500 yards.

The 6.5 creedmore is NOT a long range hunting round. The Grendel damn sure isn't. the .264 is probably the only non "wildcat" 6.5 round that is a legitimate long range hunting round.

You should probably look in the direction of the 300 winny.

Also consider

300 wsm
7mm rem mag
7mm STW

I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor for long range and hunting. I don’t find it has enormous knock down power. I wouldn’t shoot an elk with it although there are some out there that do.

For punching paper in a crosswind less than 12 mph I can normally get an MOA group at 1000 yards with handloads. It’s a great caliber with relatively low recoil and excellent ballistics farther out than most of us normal shooters can shoot.

If you want knock down power at those ranges I would go with 300 Win Mag.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is that it is not a long range hunting round. It's a 300 yard hunting rifle on deer size game (give or take).

Look at the 26, 28, and 30 Nosler if you want more velocity wihout having a belted mag. Also can look at the Remington Ultra mag stuff.

As does the 6.5-300 wby

As to the 6.5 Grendel? No. For deer, it’s probably fine to 300-400 yds max.

26 Nosler, ok I’ll give ya that. I guess. 6.5-284 I still consider a wildcat.
