anyone on here do the majority of their rifle hunting from lock on stands? I want to be more mobile next season and hunt lock-on stands more but not sure about not having a shooting rest for my gun

if you want to be mobile, wouldn't you want to hunt out of a climber?

either way, I've rifle hunted a lot out of lock-ons and you can buy some with rifle rests

either that or practice your free hand shot

If you have to hunt a lock on, get a shooting stick if you can't get a lockon with a rest

I bought a few stands and leave a good many set of sticks set up and just pack in my stand. I usually have a set of primos shooting sticks that I bring too, but have been lucky enough that I didn't need to use them.

Look at this lock on, seen yesterday, and the safety/ shooting rail attachment. I think it was a death trap, even though it was only 6' from the ground...

You don't want to have to set up your steps every hunt. Get a climber. Lockons are for set spots

Climbers are also safer IMO

No point in even getting up in that thing if it was that low

Pretty much all I hunt is lock ons. Climber in late season if I can pattern a buck

I'd make a climber your first priority. The only times I use a lock on in a mobile setup is if there isn't a tree suitable for a climber or if I'm getting in tight to a bedding area and want to be able to slip in quiet later on. With the extended range of a gun neither of those should be much of an issue.

If you want to be mobile, use a lightweight lock-on and climbing sticks. I use a Lone Wolf Assault and Muddy sticks.
If you want a.shooting rest, climber is probably the way to go.

The climbing sticks are as fast as a climber, but have the benefit of being able to climb any tree.

Options include shooting stick (as already mentioned) and rail type shooting rests. It's pretty easy to build your own shooting rest. Attach the lock on stand to the tree. Nail a 2X4 on each side of the tree at the right height to rest your gun on. Connect the far ends of the 2X4's to each other using a piece of 1X2.

Almost always in lock ons unless it is raining and I am in a box. I use spurs most of the time until I know I am gonna leave the stand in the exact same location virtually forever then I use climbing sticks. Too many limitations with climbers. Gun or bow with sling on back, climber in one hand and spurs in spur bag in the other.
