Daiwa Liberto Pixy.

I could use spinning tackle and this would not be a question, but I really want to use a baitcaster for this.

Probably what I will go with.

12 on a baitcaster
8 on a spinning rod.

prefer flouro but mono or super mono works also depending on the technique.

Oh. You should have no problem then. I might go with 6 or 7lb just for the additional capacity. 65yd of line at 8lb isn't much if you break off any. I'd pay closer attention to line diameter than breaking strength since you're playing with so little line. Brand to brand there can be pretty significant size differences for the same weight rating.

And with that reel, you know you'll have a good drag and no concerns on losing fish surging at the boat.

What rod are you throwing it on?

Yeah, that spool is pretty small.

I’ve caught plenty of bass on my ultralight with 6lb mono. I recently swapped it to 6lb braid to try and reduce line twists.

My baitcasters all have 12lb Suffix on them.

I can’t remember the last time a fish broke me off. It has to be hundreds of bass ago. Now, I’ve missed some hook sets that I probably wouldn’t with something else.

Drag is your friend, also not hossing in the boat like on TV. You’ve gotta fight it a little.

Throwing a liberto pixy on this rod with 3/16oz SR should be no problem.

Where'd you get the pixy? I've been waiting on the curado bfs to get restocked but I'm getting impatient and want something now. Plus the pixy is lighter and I can tinker with it by doing upgrades.

6lb on a MHX spinning rod.
Only lure I use this on is a rouge, rapala, or megabass vision 110.

8 pounds but I am a badass. (lol) Plus I sometimes use 12-16 pound flouracarbon for snapper.

8lb Berkeley Big Game for everything except my crank bait rod because I’m more worried about having to muscle it out of a snag more so than a fish breaking the line. Sharp hooks and frequent re-ties keep me out of trouble mostly. I fish out of a kayak so I don’t have the room to bring too many rigs, such as a heavier set up for punching mats or flipping into heavy cover.

7lb Sunline Sniper is the lightest I’ve gone. I really have to be careful on hook sets. My drag is well tuned so that’s rarely the issue. Light line requires a subtle hook set…no snap sets on slack line.

Agreed. Anything under 10lb and you better not be setting the hook very hard. Light wire, exposed hooks are the way to go.

Most people don't realize that a lot of the Japanese hardbaits (vision 110, yellow magic, etc...) have hooks that are designed to be fished on 8lb test so they really don't need heavier line and can bend out the hooks if they really lay on a big fish.

Would be interesting to see the comparison. At some point air resistance (line diameter) not line weight will be the determining negative factor in casting distance other variables being the same.

I went 100% to braid a few years ago. But prior to that, 17 lb. Stren was on every baitcasting reel. I don't think I ever fished a tournament with line lighter than 17.

Granted, most of my fishing was in the Spillway or Verret area. But I fished more than a few tournaments at False River, Pearl River, St. John, Concordia, etc. plus quite a few at Sam Rayburn. So there was a fair amount of clear water to go along with the less clear Spillway water. When you needed to pull a fish out of grass or roseau, I put more emphasis on line strength than line visibility.

Right, but this is for one very specific application. Very light bait fished in open water on a low capacity reel.
