LDWF Safety Checks

HB 756 will take affect August 1st. Among other things there is a section on enforcement that now requires "...reasonable suspicion that a violation of this Part has occurred or is occurring." before a wildlife agent or any other officer can stop or board a vessel. So in essence, no more random safety checks without cause. Thoughts?

reasonable suspicion
Sounds vague enough to be able to make stops for random safety checks.

Yea, I dont see how it changes anything. The times I have been boarded by LDWF and USCG they always requested permission to board and I always wondered what would have happened if I had said no.

The Coast Guard can still board at will w/o any basis for doing so.

I’ve only had one negative interaction with a ldwf agent and it was damn near 15 years ago right after they went to online license sales. I had a stop in my kayak asked for license. Showed the pdf on my phone. Green jeans got shitty with me stating this wasn’t acceptable proof of license. I did argue with him over that. I was in a damn 12’ kayak with my life jacket on and a paddle and no fish. frick that guy.

They know that everyone will have expired boat decals because they are so slow. The reasonable suspicion is built in

I had a bad experience before. They were stopping every boat going back to the boat launch. I had my 10 redfish limit, plus a few specks and they took one of my redfish saying it wasn't long enough and let me go with a warning.
The fish was long enough. He didn't even measure to find out. What the hell could I have done about it though?

This is just based on what I've seen and talking to other people, but in Florida a similar law did cut down on the revenue seeking. A think a lot of their compliance with it is top-down directed, because the language always gives them room to make stuff up.

Yeah not DOW/DOD, they are Homeland Security... but crazy part is I was blown away on a layover in Turkey talking to a Coastie and he was taking some leave from a deployment with a Cutter that was in the Arabian Gulf... they also operate in international waters
