I am looking at buying some kuiu gear for an elk hunt and future hunting out west. I am slowly building up their gear from an elk hunt I went on last year, where I got my first elk. What I found out on my last hunt was that my cabelas wool jackets were to hot to wear while walking and to bulky and heavy to carry all day in my pack. What do you recommend for layering in Early November in Montana?
I already have the ultra Merino 145 base layer, Peloton 130 zip off pants, Teton rain pants and chinook pants. So far I love all the gear I have from them. What I am looking for is layering for the top. I’d like a thicker long sleeve shirt or base layer, vest and outer shell jacket. Any recommendations would be appreciated including sizing since I hear their jackets run small. This gear will also be used for bow hunting so I need it to be flexible and quiet. TIA

Here are some pics from my hunt last year:

Not really answering your question, but I know several people who have their attack pants and all say they’re the greatest pants ever and a Kuiu must have.
My son loves the guide jacket!

Call Kuiu and talk to them, I'm sure they have some knowledgeable hunters on staff that would be happy to help.

Strap the coat/jacket to your pack instead of in it. Layering is great, but November in Montana can turn into winter survival. I use the Sitka Whitetail jacket. I’m sure Kuiu has one that is similar. If I start to get sweaty, on strap it on the outside of my Badlands pack.

I hunted Montana in November last year for mule deer. It was -2°. We all stayed warm with the different clothes we had. One of our friends had a bunch of kuiu. What impressed me the most was how well it all layered. Each piece layered perfectly on top the next and formed a perfectly designed layer of insulation. Needless to say I was sold. I purchased a few layering pieces this year from their outlet and used on rokslide. I expect to be just as warm this year but not as think or heavy.

Cabelas ecwcs heavyweight base layers
Peloton 240 hoodie
Peloton 240 vest
Guide jacket (I did have this in Montana last year)
I have the chugach rain set and Kenai ultra hoodie if needed.
I wear prana Zion or wrangler hiking pants over my base.

I go to Colorado early November every year and I get the attack pants to wear for all the hiking and will pack the guide jacket along with the super down pants and jacket for when we glass or sit for a few hours over a meadow or water hole. The super down pants and jacket will bundle up into a tiny ball and are some of the warmest products I’ve ever worn. Extremely lightweight.

I started buying Kuiu gear about 3 years ago, but have since switched to First Lite. I'm whitetail hunting in Louisiana, so while the KUIU was fine stuff, just didnt work for me here. Mostly drawing my bow back. Everything is lightweight, form fitting. I didn't find the comfort level drawing my bow back that I do with the First Lite whitetail stuff. I'm no help at all, ........sorry.

Do you hunt public land up there? I’m jealous. That’s the best land in the lower 48.

In our group of hunters, I have Firstlite, one guy has Kuiu, and the other two have Sitka. We will be using our gear both in LA and out west in Colorado.

Most of my Firstlite items were purchased before last deer season and I have to say I love them. So far I've been able to find a layer combo that worked for any weather we had in LA last year.

Quality seems to be comparable across all three brands. Main thing with technical hunting apparel is getting the fit right while maintaining the ability to layer.

For 3rd rifle this year, this is my planned gear if the temps are similar to last trip we made (lows in the single digits, highs in the 40's-50's):

Bottoms: I plan on wearing a thin merino thermal pant and merino outer pant while carrying a packable puffy pant and full zip rain pant.

Tops: Thin merino t-shirt, thicker merino long sleeve hoody, packable puffy vest while carrying a puffy jacket and a waterproof outer jacket.

Footwear: wolverine wellington liner sock, med wt merino socks, Cabelas 400g instinct lace up boots.

Hope this was somewhat helpful.

can't help with Kuiu specific pieces (I use First Lite) but for spot and stalk type hunting I like a merino base layer, a lightweight pants and jacket, and then throw the packable puffy jacket and pants on for sitting.

Absolutely do this. I wear Firstlite stuff and I've had several chats with their guys about recs for certain activities in certain weather conditions. Kuiu will certainly do the same.

What part of MT?

I usually hunt around Livingston.

But definitely get the guide jacket.
