I saw tarantulas at Red Dirt about 25 years ago and never visited again
They have the giant red headed centipedes there too
I've spent a lot of time out there. Red Dirt has plenty of scorpions too. Just pick up a rock and look under it. It won't take long to find one. Black widows galore as well.
One of the strangest things I've seen there is a couple of roadrunners crossing the road in front of me.

Is it mostly pine trees with oaks along creeks?
Will I need climber or loc on? I plan on bringing both.

Ive been hunting primitive weekend in red dirt for a few years with a couple buddies. It’s the weekend before rifle and less people that weekend. Shot a small doe last year, it’s usually just a meat hunt.
I hunt out of a climber and you’re correct the pines are tall, straight and spaced out. Good for climbing. And Some oak bottoms that follow the creeks. Lots of steep hills, unlike anywhere else in LA.
I’ll typically go scout looking for scrapes and rubs on Friday, and put my climber out Friday night. Then hunt all day sat and Sunday morning.
Last year we lucked out with the weather. The high was like 72 and low was almost in the 40s. Was super nice for mid October.
I’ve never come across anything crazy as far as dangerous wildlife, couple daddy long legs in the tent, think I saw a rattlesnake one year, and last year a hog was waiting by my tree climber in the morning lol had to shoo him away…but you are deep in the woods out there so I believe people do see all species of stuff.
My only gripe is there’s more people every year it seems like, I couldn’t imagine hunting rifle weekend. Last year I found a good spot, marked it off with ribbon, and about 15 mins til sunrise some dude comes walking up and sets up 30-40 yards from me. I shined my light ant him and he just stayed there. I know that’s just something you deal with on public land, but it pissed me off. Had to move my stand to a different spot for the afternoon and ended up killing in the random spot.

One of the few places you can hit a grand slam - coral snake, rattlesnake, copperhead & cottonmouth all in the same place.
And probably run across the occasional tarantula.

Canebrakes are the most docile venomous snake I have ever encountered. AlxTgr and I were scouting in Bayou Cocodrie NWR, both almost stepped on a 5’ CBR while walking on a trail, and it didn’t even move or try to strike. Just lay there. We came close to shitting our pants.

Yea I’ve been to Tunica hills. The terrain is just as steep if not more in kisatchie. Kisatchie is probably more rocky, and has a higher elevation. It might have a few less “waterfalls” than tunica.

And Sonny Gilbert, aka Sicily Island.

Yeah I really wish I would’ve free-handled this one for some video, but I was one day 1 of a 16 day solo trip to Arizona so I didn’t want to take any chances. But it was certainly amenable to handling. I’d say black-tailed rattlesnakes (both ornatus & molossus) are the most docile rattlesnakes of the dozen species I’ve encountered so far.

@TigrrrDad,
I may have asked you this before (can't remember!), but do you think there is any population of Eastern Diamondbacks left in SE Louisiana?
Also, any possible Western Diamondbacks in western Louisiana near the Texas border?

I know I’m late to the party.
How thick are the hunters on Kisatchie’s Catahoula Preserve are for primitive?
I’ve scouted and been for bow and turkey but never for a gun season.

After looking at map a little more we will be south of fort Polk not west. Think it’s called Vernon unit.
With that being said this area should be open due to it not being part of Fort Polk correct?

It's Vernon unit of Calcasieu district. Wife worked there and retired from that district.

Correct. Per US forest service website, "Recreation Sites are Open
National forest recreation sites remain open during the Federal government lapse in funding."
Lots of helpful information on their website including maps.
