Hi there, New hunter. first season last year. Lucky me had a friend with nice private land and was kind enough to bring me along. Lucky me even shot a doe. I don't like to rely on others generosity and hoping to get a few days in on public land. I have camped in Kisatchie but have questions hunting and the website leaves me scratching my head a bit. Particularly looking at Evangeline Unit. Disperse camping legal? as I in I can drive down one of those dirt roads, find a spot and hike in for a sit and hunt? Park along road and hike in? Thanks. Intimidating to get started and don't know anyone whose hunted it or public land. Planning on giving NF a call, but wanted to hear from any voices of experience.

There is a map on the Kisatchie website of the roads that are legal for driving on, but yes, you can drive down any open road, park, and walk in.

Most of the roads are open for driving, which honestly makes it difficult to get away from people, especially on weekends.

I've been hunting the Evangeline unit for 3 or 4 years now.

You can camp pretty much anywhere except you have to be 200 feet from the red cockaded woodpecker trees if you set up camp. If you make a fire you need a fire ring. Can hunt anywhere except the Claiborne bombing range. Sometimes the whole bombing range is open sometimes but You have to see what will be open

This is something I've always wondered about but could never confirm. Always seemed like the only places you could camp were off of the wild Azalea trail or in the campgrounds.

Thanks for that. Helpful. I was hoping to get out a scout a spot and learn the area but life got in the way. Any knowledge on just camping out there? Dispersed? or does it have to be in designated sites?

EDIT: didn't see above replies - thanks

I don’t hunt the Evangeline Unit but I’m sure most districts are the same. There is some good info in the Louisiana hunting regulations book for specific hunting seasons and regulations. As far as camping goes you can pretty much camp anywhere and hunt anywhere but check the rules for certain distances for hunting near roads, buildings, etc. Call the district office if you have any questions. They are really helpful and will call enforcement officers if they don’t know the answers to make sure they are giving accurate information.

Kisatchie takes work like any other public land, but if you put some leg work in, you will find deer. I've seen them all over the Evangeline Unit. The hurricanes have done a number on the place over the last few years, but not nearly as bad as the Vernon Unit.

Either-sex rifle is this weekend. I plan to be up there Saturday afternoon and Sunday. I'm no expert on Kisatchie, but if you want some pointers and you're hunting this weekend, maybe we can meet up.

As others have said, yes to all of that.

National Forest is a lot less restrictive than your average WMA which is nice.

Last time I hunted Kisatchie was 20 years ago and 25 years ago since I participated in a trail ride up there, so I got nothing to offer. Just wanted to say that this is impressive. Good luck!

Wear LOTS of orange. Paint yourself orange. Paint your gun orange.

Its a fun place to hunt but its a bit of a trick to escape the yahoos.

Lucky for you, they still allow dog deer hunting on Kisatchie.

I don’t think so for deer.

No, they don't. It's been years since that was legal.

Scout twin bridges side of Kinkaid lake.
Read regulations for legal days.

Also, many of the hardwood bottoms got hit hard by the hurricane. You can probably get around fine walking around but dragging a deer over those trees is gonna be brutal

May want to stay on the ridges

Kisatchie is a National Forest therefore you can camp anywhere inside it's boundaries, unlike State WMA lands in where you can only camp in designated primitive camping areas

I heard dogs on kisatchie last weekend. Hear em every year. Some guys never stopped running them.

Doesn't mean they are doing it legally, which is what the guy I responded to was suggesting.

Didn't realize that was finally final (no deer hounding in Kisatchie). I haven't hunted central LA in over a decade. My place in Southern MS (Desoto NF) gets dog hunting, but I enjoy a few races a year as long as its not incessant.

To the OP, hunting in any NF is a challenge and any legal buck is a trophy.
