Kisatchie is a National Forest therefore you can camp anywhere inside it's boundaries, unlike State WMA lands in where you can only camp in designated primitive camping areas
re: Adding crawfish to supplement a pond
Posted by PVillePandG on 11/2/21 at 2:47 pm to CrawDude
This guy gets it...He answered every one of your concerns correctly.
1) Drain pond if possible..This is done to ensure hardy and tolerant bloodlines of the stocked fish aren't compromised by wild diseases of native species
2) Never stock hybrid species. Any true hybrid will be genetically sterile..
3) Copper Nosed Bluegill - correct
4) Never stock Black or White Crappie..Your pond isn't big enough for them. They are avid spawners and even bigger eaters. Your pond would be stunted if you did
5) Stock according to pre-determined ratios...There are ratios for a reason. They know the number based on hectares of what best promotes trophy growth.
6) If you want variety stock a defined amount of channel cat. Exactly right. Why? Because the eggs of channel cat need running water to hatch. They will not hatch in a pond; therefore, the Channel Cat will not be competing for food.
7) If it were me I would first stock it with mosquito fish (Gambula Rostrata)..allow to sit for a period of time then stock with current state ratios
8) Crawfish also need rising and falling water to reproduce. Females lay eggs when the water has dried above and they are in their small pools below surface in hopes that when it floods she can carry them to the surface waters to grow. If you put crawfish in they would feed your fish once. Waste

re: Sunbream Overpopulation??
Posted by PVillePandG on 4/27/19 at 11:30 pm to LBro337
You need to do what is called a "soft Seine" to your pond. It is probably the most effective way to determine the overall health of the pond. Seine one corner slowly..when you examine the species in the net there should be equal numbers of small bass to larger bass, and larger Bream to smaller bream. If there are no larger fish it is overpopulated, if no smaller fish, it is either understocked or something like a flood, disease, or spring overturn happened, etc

ARE they even good enough to get a good practice in against or help us get better in any way? How and why did we wind up with SLU on our schedule? I just don't see what we get out of this game. There are cup cakes and then there is this. How do the players even get up for a game like this. To have a good practice you have to have the right mindset to where you have a certain concentration level and I just don't see that happening. I just see a sloppy useless practice happening that we get nothing out of and probably causes more harm than good.

I saw where Cornwell added 2-3 books to the series since I read the 6 or so that started it. The books were great.

I'm pretty sure Ghengis Khan has already answered this question for you. The light, highly manuverable, Mongolian calvary decimated the heavy cavalry of Russia and Eastern Europe on EVERY occasion they met.
re: Best poison ivy remedy?
Posted by PVillePandG on 7/21/18 at 7:22 pm to boom roasted
From someone who grew up EXTREMELY allergic to poison ivy (contact with it ALWAYS ended up with a visit to the hospital and weeks of miserable itching) I spent my entire life searching for a miracle compound to combat the effects of this vile weed. After searching for 20 years, I have found that NOTHING works quicker, more effective, and completely than Sycamore bark tea. Simply find a Sycamore tree and collect the bark that naturally falls off of the tree around the base. Break apart into one inch sections. Boil about a 1/2 -1 lb batch of bark covered in water. Boil for 10 minutes and allow to cool enough to handle. Place a clean towel in the tea. Squeeze excess water from towel and wrap over the area infected. Allow the damp rag to sit on the infected area about 5-10 minutes. Treat the area about 3 times. You will be simply amazed at how fast this makes poison ivy's symptoms obsolete. The Indians used this treatment for centuries and I kick myself every day for not learning of it sooner
re: Using MDMA to treat PTSD

Shulgin's original research into phenylamines and amphetamines were for their use in treating illnesses of the mind. He had great success in using them to treat and suppress depression, obsessive, compulsive, anxiety, and conditions such as PTSD. If anything, it's good to hear they are opening up and preserving past endeavors prior to the meddling of the federal government

Taboo - Steven Knight - Opinion
Posted by PVillePandG on 6/30/18 at 8:29 pm
Anyone else watch Taboo? After Peaky Blinders, I definitely wanted to see what Steven Knight could do with Tom Hardy after seeing his masterpiece with Alfie Solomon. Only on episode 4/5, but it seems to be starting extremely slow. Masterfully done though, definitely dark. Does it pick up?
re: Bass dying in Pond
Posted by PVillePandG on 6/30/18 at 4:16 pm to DelaTiger
What happened was indeed a form of hpoxia called "spring overturn". Its quite common in the wild, but in this case you actually did two things to "force" it to happen unknowingly. One, when you fertilized your pond the change in water color was the direct result of an algal bloom. When these algae died and sunk to the bottom of the pond they created an anaerobic environment as they decomposed. When you started the pumps and circulated the water from the bottom back up to the surface layers of water with little to no oxygen mixed with layers of normal water creating a hypoxic environment for the fish, killing them. In nature, this happens naturally in deep ponds or oxbows and is called "spring overturn" because spring rains create the current needed to circulate the low oxygen water deep up to surface

Most people use Blue Leriope, Veragated Leriope, or Daylillies as the plants arranged in a circle around your major landscape points..They are extrememly low maintainance and flowers can be offset just inside of them to accent the circles slope leading up to the tree

That, or a Rock Bass..but the Goggle Eye we catch on the Sabine and the rock bass we identified in the French Parishes when I used to identify fish for a living looked much different.
re: Panfish ID chart. (Let's get ready to rumble edition)
Posted by PVillePandG on 6/10/18 at 2:28 am to Boat Motor Bandit
Goggle Eye are not Warmouth. True Warmouth identification only has Warmouths reaching a maximum of a few inches in length. Goggle Eye are Green Sunfish which have a substantially bigger body. I think the confusion comes with 1) the name, as Goggle Eye do indeed have very large mouths and 2) Most pictures of Green Sunfish do a poor job representing the color patterns seen in South Louisiana.

I was wondering this same thing. He is a true duel threat QB that could potentially blossom at LSU over time. I think the only negative comments ive heard is his size.
I know his family well too. I wouldnt say he is a Guidry lock if LSU comes snooping lol

I agree. Grew up in Welsh, and still visit there quite often. I wouldn't say the French culture is too prevalent. It does seem like the farther you get away from the Basin, both West and East, the Cajun culture falls off pretty quick.

Maybe you're thinking of a coon and the glands on those. Never heard of having to take them out of squirrels.
So, note to self......an enterprising young man has figured out for us that a cheap bag of birdseed can yield the "Berkshire" of squirrel meat. Sounds like a fair trade to me

I'm with a majority of the other people on the board in saying your plants may just be concentrating on growing rather than producing. I would remove any "suckers" around the base of the plant that might be robbing its production energy and also keep in mind that I believe "Creole" types are part of the "heat tolerant" types and are late bloomers anyway. Might just be a little too early for them?
re: Catfish Jugging Bait
Posted by PVillePandG on 5/21/14 at 5:47 pm to Big Worm
Now, this is something I know A LOT about being that's about the only way we ever fished for catfish. The short answer is it depends on where you're fishing and for what type of catfish you're trying to catch. If you're limiting yourself to ONLY what you will find in say, Wal-Mart don't waste time with any of the "ready made" bait like doughbait (especially) on jugs or "shiners in a bag" etc. We have used almost every one of them with varying degrees of luck, ALL mainly on the bad luck side. The frozen fish, like mackeral or cigar minnows, cut up would probably work better than anything in a bag, but even these don't compare to fresh cutbait when available. Your best bet, and what we've had the best luck with from what you can get in a store, would probably be good ole fashion nightcrawlers. Some of the best bait we've used in general is live crawfish, fresh shrimp, and live minnows/bream.

When I first started to date my now wife (married 9 years) her mother and father offered to take us out to eat in order to get to know me better. My wife told me that her Dad was an ex-Marine and currently works as a nuclear scientist (like a real one). That night was the first time I was to meet him. "Our women" were getting ready and it left us by ourselves for the first time. He said, "Son, are you familiar with the mathematical symbol pi?" I said, "Yes sir.. 3.1416?" His eyebrows raised slightly and he asked, "Very impressive sir, but do you know the correct application in which it's used?" I responded, "Yes sir. I believe it's used to find the circumference of a circle". He smiled and said (and I will NEVER forget this)..that's where college has failed you, son...although pi may be a mathematical symbol used by some to figure out a unit of distance those of us that have been married 25 years know its primary function is to figure out time"...Of course, I was quite confused. He called out down the hall, "Honey, when do you think you girls will be ready? "Probably another 30 minutes" You see 30min X 3.1416 = Actual time we'll be leaving the house

I'm the same way...If I even look at it the wrong way it's on!
The two ABSOLUTE BEST cures for poison ivy is as follows:
1) As already stated, "straight" bleach...use a Q-Tip and put it on the rash/bumps several times a day...It WILL knock the itch and the rash out in less than a week.
2) Now....the absolute fastest and best cure for poison ivy that I've EVER tried is Sycamore Tea....Yeah yeah yeah....I know...I thought the exact thing when I heard this (look it up)...You basically take the bark from a sycamore tree and boil it in water until it's the color of tea...wet a rag and simply put it over the area that has poison ivy....I had a SEVERE case and it was cured in TWO days...and the itching stopped immediately and never returned...I have NO idea what's in there, but it sure as shite works..
You're welcome
