I don't remember ever walking up on a snake that I could smell long before I got to it that wasn't a cottonmouth. Wonder why they stink so damn bad???
Killed many a cottonmouth with many a stick

quote:
en sufficiently stressed or threatened, this species engages in a characteristic threat display that includes vibrating its tail and throwing its head back with its mouth open to display the startling white interior,[10] often making a loud hiss while the neck and front part of the body are pulled into an S-shape position.[16] Many of its common names, including "Cottonmouth" and "gapper", refer to this behavior, while its habit of snapping its jaws shut when anything touches its mouth has earned it the name "trap-jaw" in some areas.[17] Other defensive responses can include flattening the body[16] and emitting a strong, pungent secretion from the anal glands located at the base of the tail.[5] This musk may be ejected in thin jets if the snake is sufficiently agitated or restrained. The smell has been likened to that of a billy goat, as well as to a genus of common flood plain weeds, Pluchea, that also have a penetrating odor.[

quote:You live in the wrong place then. I'll agree that when I lived in SELA, I didn't see many moccasins, but since living in South MS, I've seen a shite ton of them creepy bastids. And no, not in the water. They're usually in roadside ditches, friggin water meters (that'll freak you out when you take the lid off one), or in the squirrel woods. Lotsa copperheads in the squirrel woods too.
I've been catching snakes since I was 6/7 years old. Not sure I've seen more than 8 cottonmouths in the wild in over 35 years.
I landscaped for a long time, so I guess my chances of seeing snakes was pretty high. At the nursery, them friggers would get under the flats of plants...probably for water, since we had irrigation going every morning. Then we'd see a lot of copperheads in mulch or in thick ground cover. Saw quite a few "ground rattlers", whatever they are. But I've only seen one rattlesnake in my life, and one coral snake. And no, it wasn't a corn snake. Red on yellow. It was in pine straw in a flower bed.
Pretty easy to tell the difference between a water snake and a cottonmouth IMO. The cottonmouths I've seen were thick as shite and only about 2' long. Hate em.

You're the one getting all bent. Continue shooting all your moccasins, squatches, black panthers, Easter Bunnies and Red Nosed Reindeer.

Fwiw the snakes I killed looked like snake #1 in the pic above and furthermore I don't need some a-hole on a message board trying to play snake doctor telling me what kind of snakes they were. I've been shooting these things my entire life.

If you have only seen 8 cotton mouths on 35 years, you've obviously not been hunting along the Mississippi river. They're pretty thick around tensas refuge. And yes, I know cotton mouths from water snakes. I've seen a many of white mouths on the banks of the tensas at night.

Red on yellow...

The coral snake resembles other, nonvenomous snakes. This resemblance of colors has resulted in the popular saying, "Red on black, you're OK jack. Red on yellow, you're a dead fellow."
