But you're Acting like the moccasin is this rare sighting, makes me think you don't. I've seen a ton and I'm almost half your age. And please don't tell me I can't identify them little stumpy bastards.

I ain't playing with no snake. If I know its a king snake it lives. All others should have stayed out of my way

yellow (especially the tips of the tails)

Sometimes this is the best giveaway.

They are usually appear to be completely black at our place unless (heaven forbid) you get close enough to see the brown markings.

~75% of the time I can tell when one is close before I see it when I'm walking. They stink so damn bad.

Suppose I kill a rattlesnake in ascension parish. What is it?

My uncle killed an eastern diamondback in ascension. It was close to 6', but I don't think the other small ones that we see sometimes are diamondbacks.
Maybe a timber rattler?

Looks like a winner from what I'm seeing on wiki. I've only seen one and I'm perfectly cool with never seeing another.

Any snakes killed must be posted with a pic, or it will be declared a water/brown snake.

Is there any king snakes like that in Louisiana, the only ones I see are the black and yellow speckled ones.

You mean coral snake mimics (red, yellow, and black)? Yes.

Scarlet Kingsnake:

Louisiana Milksnake (a type of king snake):

And to the question about the Ascension Parish rattler, it was probably a Canebrake/Timber Rattler. Eastern Diamondbacks don't usually get this far west.

According to the ob snake doctor, you need a degree on this subject.
Maybe next time I'll take pics.
F that, I'll just put black/brown, yellow tailed, slit pupils, pit viper shaped head, white inner mouth stinking, disictive thick black stripe on side of his face, sob's in a fricking box and mailem to him.a

In many places, it is.

Whether you can or you cannot is irrelevant. The fact remains that more often than not, "water moccasin" sightings are one of two to three species of water snake. Very much like the ground rattler/brown snake problem. We have had at least two water moccasin pics threads here where the snake pictured was a water snake. broad banded and diamond back.

This should be rule 1 of OB. Even before the mention of The Judge or melanistic mountain lions.

Most are brown with mottling, and have a yellow tail. Some older ones will be mostly black, as they lose their mottling.

Never knew that..thought it was 2 different snakes.

Learned something here tonight.

Off to bed to dream about snakes.

Better.

FWIW, I don't even have a degree on this shite. Just live in a snaky part of the world, and spend a lot of time in woods and water.

Nodust, along with black/yellow king snakes, leave the green snakes alone too.

Scarlet kingsnake is pretty, and shows the red on black OK Jack theory well.

My bad, you and the kid who thought "farm" constituted a barn with some chickens, pigs, goats and cows.

That's what I have always called them. Just fishing for some confirmation
