I saw a video on someone who did it from Minnesota to NOLA. Me and a friend were discussing trying it out ourselves. we have moderate experience kayaking but nothing near anything this big. anyone have experience with long distance trips like this. What to look for in a kayak? What to look for concerning camping gear besides the obvious. Thanks for any advice.

If you just have to do it, start on some smaller rivers that dont have as much traffic and work your way up.

I would think it is doable with some planning and low river conditions up and down the river. While it's always dangerous, when the river hits less than 4 feet down here it's hardly moving current wise. Would just have to make sure you are visible to tugs and barges would be my biggest concern.

No. Great innovative idea for drowning yourself on purpose.

This will sound like BS but I met that guy on a sandbar several miles North of Natchez. He was an odd fellow but I gave him water and enough money to have a nice meal. I told him about the restaurant and bar Under The Hill at Natchez. A few days later my cousin calls and says my name has been mentioned in the news paper after they interviewed that cat.

Going the distance would last longer that the fun of the experience. I talked to some guys coming down the river and it took them almost 3 months If I remember correctly.

I was duck hunting the big muddy two years ago and met a guy from south dakota who left in march and was here in january

I gave him some birds and water. He had two canoes tied together like a catamaran. He looked like the guy off castaway.

Some guys I knew in high school did it a couple of years ago. I dont think the kayaking is terribly difficult.

he said every few days he would stop and spend a couple days to rest. he had a bike and shite in one canoe and him in the other so he wasn't looking for speed.

Seems like almost any southern river would be nicer to paddle than the Miss. Look at a satellite image, it's pretty mush all industrial down here. I'd just knock out all the closer small ones to quench your explorer bug, at least you could camp along them with relative ease.
