I know they travel the river . Me and a friend saw one on the levee up at Three Rivers at night . Not black , more like a cougar . Ran out in the road . Then across a bean field towards Squirrel Slew .

You haven't mentioned a tail yet.
Most of the 'black panthers' people see are well, ok not most but the one's where people actually see a big cat are usually a mountain lion. Their fur makes them appear black in everything but direct light. I've seen that and it's for real. I know a lot of people including family I trust completely who swear they saw a 'black panther' but they know it was not actually black no matter what their eyes were telling them they were seeing.
Thing about cougars is that light gets dispersed and the brain fills in the blank. Makes it look black for all intents and purposes. Personally the time I saw a mountain lion it was more than cool enough without it being black but I'll admit, it looked black. I'm pretty sure that's the eye/brain playing tricks on you because of the way light reflects off those critters. They appear to be soaking the light up and not reflecting it.
But seeing it in direct headlights up close... doubt that effect would be so evident.

I agree . The one I saw never looked black . It was one big arse cat . Had to have weighed over 100 lbs .

I don't really agree on a brown cat looking black at night. When I lived in California a friend and I would pan for gold in dry creek beds, we were stalked once and crossed paths with one on another occasion, both after dark the only black on their arse was from shadows when we shined the light on them.

i believe, but I have seen a tan one in broad day light in Franklin county MS while on the deer stand. My parents said we had a black panther in our pasture when I was just a baby also, how ever that would have been 39 yrs ago.

Every pic I have ever seen looked like a house cat. With thousands of trail cams spread out over Louisiana you would think one would have a picture of it if there was such a creature.
