It’s time for a new/used Tahoe

I am considering staying away from a newer or less proven model so I am thinking about anything from 2018 and up.
Needs:hauling pontoon, sxs, and Four kids.
For those of you that know:
What years do you prefer?
What years would you stay away from?
What maximum mileage would you consider?
What motor do you like the best?
Thank you.
You can even add an Expedition /armada/sequoia in there if you like.

Careful if it has the 6.2, but the 5.3s seem ok.
Pay more if you find a low-mile, no-story car.

First off, not a fan of the turbocharged V6 engines in Expeditions, I would not consider, personally.
As far as the Tahoe, I’d rather a AFM(2000-2020) V8 over their DFM(2021- current), but their 1999 & previous 5.7 V8 & 4sp OD trans were bulletproof. But finding one will be difficult…

Would you consider a 2021 Sequoia?

I’d never buy a vehicle with cylinder deactivation. I trust a turbocharger more than that garbage. I’d buy ecoboost or something used.

For all those kids and stuff, if you are dead set on a Chevy, get the 2007 gmt900 2500 suburban with a 6.0L and a 4L60 4 speed. Every gm product after that is junk with their 6 speeds and 10 speeds and active fuel management and bad lifters and bad bearing designs. Complete shite. If you want a 1500 get a 2006 but it is an older style gmt800 but you can get it with the reliable 4-speed and with 5.3 without AFM.
If you want a newer vehicle get an Expedition Max but 2023 and newer only. The ones before that have junk engines (cam phasor design) and junk transmissions (10 speed before CDF drum and torque converter improvements).
Good luck

I should have added armada, sequoia, and maybe even a Grand Cherokee L.

I had a 2021 Tahoe with the 5.3. The engine failed twice in two different ways. Lifters failed at 5,000 miles covered under warranty, one cylinder failed at 100,000 miles (out of warranty), I’ll never buy another GM product.

A full delete is easy, and does not void warranty? Even so, I don’t want to have to fix a new truck.

Have a 2018 with 133k. Been a great vehicle and have had no issues so far. Great road trip car for the family. Mine has the 6 speed transmission and it’s been good but I’d imagine im well over half life for it. I’ve read online some of this year range to be well over 200-300k with the AFM deactivated and transmission fluid/filter changes every 50k~
I actually prefer my model year interior to the newer ones. I have a small screen for CarPlay/navigation but plenty of buttons and knobs plus a good column shifter. I’ve drive some of the newer ones and don’t like the button shifter or the newest one in the 2024+.

We've had our 23 expedition for a year now and other than a couple odds and ends it's been great. It pulls my 24ft bay boat fine and I just pulled a camper with it and it handled it. The v6 has been a very capable motor and I'm impressed. I was a anti eco boost guy since they came out. It has plenty of power and torque. As someone else mentioned, you'll also avoid cylinder deactivation.

you're able to haul 6 people + gear with the trunk space of a tahoe? impressive.
New Armadas are very nice. Has new motor made in Japan.
You can drive yourself crazy with engine failure stories. Odds are whatever you pick will be fine. I drive a 23 Suburban with 5.3. No issues. Reallly wanted the 3.0 diesel.

Just plug the removal device in the port. If you need to take it in, take it out

That doesn’t help the lifters

Might actually be a decent option. Sorry I don’t know much about them. They don’t have as much room as a long version suburban or expedition.

sequoia
Short like the Armada. Don’t get 2023+ versions as they are junk (engine bearings).

My neighbor has one. They have an extra car. The neighbor is often driving the extra car due to the Cherokee being in the shop.

We bought a 1996 model in late 1995 and I sold in 2019 with just under 600k on it and it was still highly reliable mechanically. Looked like hell but the damn thing was BULLET proof. By far the best vehicle I ever owned. Had some transmission issues when it had less than 50K and when GM fixed that it was sound as the pound. Not only bullet proof but it was my hunting and fishing truck the last 10 or so years that we owned it and I abused the hell out of it....it was almost as good an offroad vehicle as a jeep....and it just kept on ticking. It looked like hell when I sold it but it ran like a top and had never had much done to it beyond normal maintenance.
Ours was the barn door 4 door model. 1/2 ton 4WD. I think, the best I remember, we paid about $28k for it. That's about $21 a mile. over 24 years. not including interest of course...even adjusted for inflation I doubt ANY new vehicle will match that 20+ years down the road from now.

My wife bought a 2014 Sequoia in 2018 with less than 50K on it for $20k - lady she bought it from paid cash for it new and when she decided to sell it let my wife know and we bought it site unseen. I suspect she paid about $50k for that damned thing brand new. It wasn't the platinum series but it was pretty damned nice. My wife loved it - I liked it but it was a maintenance hog and you pretty much had to change oil at a Toyota dealership. She (my wife) put about 150k on it and it started using about a quart of oil between fill ups so she sold it and bought a Camry in 2024. She has since sold it and bought a VW Jetta. I just bought a 2024 Corolla for a commuter. That's 3 Toyotas we have owned since 2018. Two of them were very maintenance heavy and the Corolla has body panels falling off it. I know, I know, folks are all about Toyotas but in MY experience they are not all they are cracked up to be. My wife has driven BMWs and Mercedes vehicles and they were substantially more maintenance intensive than her Sequoia and her Camry. My Corolla is giving every indication that it is going to be the same. I will say the Camry and Corolla both got and get incredible gas mileage....my corolla consistently gets 47 MPG on my 42 mile one way commute. Her Sequoia was horrendous at the gas pump. My 2014 GMC 3500 gas longbed crew cab 4 WD gets about 12 mpg and it sips fuel compared to that damned big Toyota V8.....
