The laws back when I made my sawed off shotgun was the barrel could not be shorter than a certain length (I think it was 17") and the overall length could not be shorter than a certain length (I think it was 35"). I used a tube cutter to cut the barrel off. When I shoot it fire comes out a foot or two. Again this was in the late 80's. I have seen Mossberg sawed off shotguns that look like mine.

Found a guy that does some special custom loading and picked up 30 from him In ‘00’ buck
I'd be very leery of anybody's reloads for self defense purposes.

Google "Massad Ayoob Hand Loads" for some discussion. Most articles will be oriented toward CCW, but the concepts are applicable to shotshells.

If you live in BR contact me (guntraining@att.net) and I'll hook you up with a box of Remington factory loads - I'll have to look and see what pellets they're loaded with).

ETA: The 20 gauge shells I have are Remington 2-3/4" Reduced Recoil (1 oz. @ 1200 ft/sec) 00 Buckshot (8 pellets)
.
ETA #2: I see that you found 5 factory boxes at pawn shop, so you should be GTG.

I hand load TSS and trust me a #4 TSS round would shite on any buckshot load made. Find a dude that will load you some TSS it will cost you an arm and leg but is your life worth and extra few bucks?

Appreciate your input Dawg23

I did a bit of research on the custom round place I found. Link below. Will absolutely go test some of his stuff first. It’s not a black market type guy (I hope!)

This is false. Beyond point blank range birdshot is not going to give definite stops. A heavy jacket can completely stop it.

Birdshot is for birds. Buckshot is for stopping a threat.

I'm willing to bet you that at 10-12 yards #6 shot will only have a spread of maybe 5 inches and will go through and through the wall of your home, unless brick. It will definitely take down a human. Try it if you don't believe me or use Google, it is your friend, and search it. Plenty of videos on YouTube to prove it.

If a rabbit can stop #6 shot from exiting then it’s not a good enough penetrator for defense.

There is no rabbit that can take a blast from high brass 6 shot within 10 yards and it not exit. As I said, Google is your friend!

When is comes to firearms/ammo capabilities and recommendations, Google is not my friend. You can find plenty of people posting thoughts or posting videos that know nothing about the topic at hand.

Upgrade is correct in saying that bird shot/rabbit shot is a poor choice for self defense.

The diameter of the pattern at 10-12 yards (or at any distance beyond 12 yards, is dependent on the barrel choke.

Here are some links to some truly accredited gun experts, with their opinion of birdshot:

The spread for purposes of penetration is largely irrelevant. The pellets make their own wound channels. This is why buckshot is so incredibly effective at close range.

1 buck is pretty widely considered the smallest pellet that will consistently give adequate penetration. Theres arguments for 4 buck, but theres no argument for birdshot when talking about stopping a person. Buckshot is for stopping, birdshot is for birds. You have your reasons for using it and that is fine, but do not trust it to give reliable instant stops. A guy in winter clothing might not get more than some really nasty bruises from it.

Very good information to post! I never said birdshot was the best but if that's what you have, with enough shots, it will work. My own HD shotgun is loaded with OO buckshot. Thanks for posting the great articles!

I checked my ammo box and I have one box of Remington #4 shot in 3" magnums. I also have one box of 6 shot and one of 8 shot. Both of these are 2 3/4" shells.

I have had these for 20+ years - will they go bad?
