High end homes always install hardwoods first. If you guys want to install your laminate or engineered fake floors after cabinet install, go right ahead. But real hardwoods go in first.

How are you finishing the baseboards? Will they be installed before flooring, or will you use a shoe mold?

If you want to avoid using a shoe mold, you’d have to lay the floors before the cabinets

My cabinet maker left a space, maybe 1/2” for the hardwood to slide under, so it looks like it goes all the way under the cabinets, and we don’t have a shoe molding.

I like it a lot.

I'm assuming the reason to install real hardwoods first is so they can be finished before the cabinets are installed. Which makes sense. But you can refinish hardwoods with cabinets down. Not as easily and not as well in the corners and what not, but it can be done.

I wasn't commenting on that anyway. I was simply replying to it so anything now to make your work in 20 years easier.

Install site-finished hardwood first, and finish them. Cabinets should basically be installed the day before you move in.

If the hardwood is pre-finished, you could possibly get away with it. But I would wait for the cabinets until the end unless you want them to get beat to hell. I've seen it happen. Besides, cabinetry costs about 2x hardwood on a whole-house basis. For us, outside of framing and brick, cabinetry was the single biggest cost of our build.

I used to build and install cabinets and we always did it before. Cuts down on cost of flooring plus you don’t risk scratching your new floors

Raise your cabinet height to 38 or 40 inches. You won't regret it.

Dude the shop I worked at built cabinets for bobby jendal, the owner of raising Cain’s, and endless amounts of houses in the country club of Louisiana. I’m talking $100,000 cabinet jobs. We always put the cabinets down first, you have no clue what you’re talking about lmao

install before or dishwasher won't work out fitting. you are only talking about a few bucks per ² ft.
no reason to put plywood subfloor down make sure you do a moisture and pressure test on the slab also make sure you have a moisture barrier applied to the slab or you will have issues.

For those saying put cabinets down before hardwood floors, how do you site finish the hardwoods w/o messing up the brand new cabinets?

After. If you ever have to pull up those hardwood floors for any reason, it’ll be a lot easier if the flooring wasn’t run under the cabinets too.

This. no one keeps floors forever anymore.

If its true old school solid hardwoods it needs to go in first. You cant sand it well under the cabinet toe kicks otherwise, without alot of trouble. However in reality it will be which sub can get there first. Are you putting the floor over sleepers with tar in between them? If so you really need to do floor first

It’s true 3/4” solid hardwood.

And I’m the GC so I can tell the cabinet installer to hold off if it’s better to lay floor down first.

Have you asked your floor guy what he would prefer and reasons for doing so?

I've been there. I learned that anything dealing with building a house, particularly if it involved woodworking, had 2 completely different opinions on how things should be done.

Next time I build I'm putting down solid hardwood and I'm doing it before I put in cabinets AND before my baseboards.

That's a very important detail.

In that case I'd lay the floor first. It will be easier, less corners and the layout will likely be more square.

There's really absolutely right or wrong way to do it, just what is a little easier and cheaper.
