Never hunted bear, only hunt public land or private land where bait isn't allowed. Perhaps that's why I've never seen one. I sure spend a helluva lot of time hiking/scouting/biking/hunting to have never encountered a bear if they were as common as you claim.

Hunted on the rifle lottery last year on Tensas. Saw more bear than deer. Been squirrel hunting on Tensas, see bear.

Ive heard Kelly purkey has said that even if black bear was delisted tomorrow, lawsuits will probably be filed by tree hugger groups the next day causing a multi year court battle, this delaying any possible season.

I did a speech on this last semester and learned a lot of good stuff. At the time it said they would make a decision in 2013 but I never found anything to support delisting. I think they still need to expand the areas the bears can live in, maybe move some from Tensas to other protected areas in the state.

"Closer to Success"

quote:

outlined in the 1995 USFWS Black Bear Recovery Plan, and are working aggressively to meet those goals. The criteria specified in the USFWS Black Bear Recovery Plan must be met in order to delist the Louisiana black bear delisting goals are: 1. At least two viable subpopulations, one each in the Tensas and Atchafalaya River Basins. 2. Immigration and emigration corridors between the two viable subpopulations. 3. Long-term protection of the habitat and interconnecting corridors that support each of the two viable subpopulations used as justification for delisting.

here in NE FL weve had a few different wildlife officers tell us to shoot them if they keep tearing up our feeders.

The big fires in the Okeefenokee swamp pushed them out to the osceola national forest and surrounding leases.
I never saw a bear(plenty of tracks) until after the fires 5-6 yrs ago. And now Ive seen close to 20 the last couple yrs

I think you would get in more trouble shooting a bear here than you would most anything short of shooting a human. If you do shoot one, make it look like self defense, rake his claws across your face, gnaw off a few fingers with his teeth, plant a gun on it. Anything to make it look like the bear caused the incident.

According to some sources, if you're clawed up and the bear is shot in the head/chest region AND you call for medical assistance you'll be ok.

I heard the story last gear about a friend of a friend squirrel hunting near Africa Lake. He got between a sow and her cubs in a woods road and she charged him. He says he sho at her an missed and she pulled up about ten feet from him roared at him and ran off. He went to HQ and reported exactly what had happened an was severely chastised. They said " you really tried to scare her Didnt you?" He says " hell no! I was trying to kill the bitch!" The chastising then went into a higher gear with threats about he better be able to show signs he was attacked. He carries a Loricin 32 for a throw down now.
