It will be a mix of Bighorn Origin Action (thanks to Kengel), criterion barrel, triggertech tigger, and a magpul stock.

For my father's day, I ordered the barrel and trigger.

I talked to Jim at Northland for probably 30 min about it.

He suggested a 26" Varmint contour barrel based on how I'll use it.

It will be in 6.5 creedmoor.
I picked it since I already have one and reload for it.

I got the triggertech special trigger since I plan on setting it at 1-1.5lbs.

I really can't wait to get everything else in and get it up and ready.

Sounds like you're dealing w/ Jim at Northland Shooters Supply. He worked w/ me 2 years ago when I converted a Stevens bolt action rifle in 270 Win to 20 Practical (20 cal bullets in 223 Rem brass). He was very knowledgable and freely shared his wisdom. I ended w/ buying a Shilen barrel from him. The gun shoots really good. Sounds like you're on your way to a really nice gun. Very thoughtful of your family. What'll you be using the gun for?

It was Jim.

He spent as much time with me as I wanted and extremely helpful.

I asked him if he'd recommend a Shilen over the Criterion and he told me no. Said that they would both shoot very close to the same.

It will be used for a mix of hunting and target shooting.
I thought I wanted a light palma contour but he said that since most of my hunting will be in a stand (and it will be used for target) the Varmint contour would be better even though it will be just a little heavier.

That's going to be a long heavy 6.5 CM. Hope you aren't planning to carry it much in the woods.

What do you want to know.

It is not a be all, end all caliber.
I wanted a 6.5 caliber and thought about the 6.5 PRS or the 6.5x47 but I already have dies (very good dies at that) for this caliber to hand load. I want to be able to shoot this one out to 600yds. That's the longest my range goes to.

That was the main thought behind the decision.

The bullet was designed for long range shooting. It's a 1000 yd cartridge. I will only be using 140 and 143 grain bullets and those have very high ballistic coefficients.

Realistically, it is very similar to the .308 but at distance, it's a little bit better.

I personally would have gone 20 or 22 inches. You really don't lose much velocity at all. If you plan on shooting suppressed you are going to wish you went a bit shorter.

I actually wanted a 24” barrel for the gun but Jim suggest the 26” plus he had that in Inventory.

I do have a 22” on my AR.

Sounds like your headed in the right direction since you consulted with someone who was knowledgeable of the product and willing to answer all your questions. I've built a lot of custom rifles over the years and this shite is an addiction, especially if you get bit by the accuracy bug. I've got 3 rifles in the works (20 VarTarg, 22 Dasher, 6BR), and still thinking what to build next.

Based on your component list, it looks like your bare rifle will weigh approx. 11 lbs. depending on the exact model Magpul stock. The Criterion "Varmint" contour is real close to the Med Palma. The 26" barrel will weigh around 5.25 lbs., and shortening the barrel to 22" would have reduced the rifle weight by 3/4 lbs or 12 ounces.

I personally like shooting a heavier rifle since I do more shooting from the bench and deer stand. Since you reload, my advice is to use Lapua brass and load for precision, not volume. Invest in a quality chronograph since it is extremely useful at the range, and the numbers will tell you a lot about your barrel and reloading technique.

Looking forward to the completed build pics

Blaze and TOTH, you two were part of the reason behind this build as well.

magpul stock.

Don't build a nice rifle like that and cheap out with that stock. Way better options out there for around the same money. The big plus is they'll look a helluva lot better. Grayboe, AG, and several others. Sound slike you got the makings of a really great build going

Oh, forgot to mention, Proof Research makes pre-fit barrels for bighorn. You could always get a barrel from them and turn the gun into a lightweight hunting rifle if you get their 20in carbon fiber.

I figured you'd have something to say along these lines. You didn't disappoint.

I have been contemplating building a rifle myself with that in mind. Have you done it were you satisfied with the results?
Thoughts are I would use a bighorn barreled action med/heavy contour from patriot valley arms for shooting some targets and have the proof on the same stock prolly a McMillan for a lighter weight hunting rifle.
Not trying to switch every week but have the ability change a barrel and rezero before a season or trip if I wanted too.
Would that setup be more of a PITA than it’s worth?
My gun fund is almost to the point of building something!!

Through trial and error. I neck size 270 brass down to .264. and trim to overall case length. You can use. 25-06, 270, 30-06 brass. But 270 has been the easiest to resize.

Then I fireform. I will load some cheap bullets at a middle of the road charge and go shoot. The brass stretches out to fit the Ackley chamber spec.

This rifle was a gift off of a pre-64 Winchester M-70 action with a Kregier barrel.

The next one I’m probably going with a old Rem 700 action on a Douglas Air gauged.
