F-I-L is in the market for a duty grade rifle that will last him the rest of his days. Says he wants to spend under $2000.

I told him he needs to limit himself to these options: DD, Geissele, LWRC, BCM, and FN.

LMT and Knights are out due to price and availability, if not, I'd tell him to go with the LMT Mars and be done with it, but that's not the case.

He wants a 16" duty grade barrel so he doesn't have to mess with pin and welding, braces, etc.

I'm tempted to tell him to get the DD or the Geissele Super Duty, but I don't know much abour who makes Geissele barrels, bolts etc.

The LWRC is also on the table because it is the only one with true ambi controls (something he'd like) and it also has a CHF barrel, but it's not Chrome lined, which most all military barrels are for long life.

The FN and BCM, to me, are about tossups and essentially the same rifle, just tough as nails mil-spec platforms that will last a long, long time, with great barrels.

Question begs, one rifle out of those, what you going with?

Build one.

I have a Radian that I built from a builders kit and have another in the way.
Criterion barrel with head spaced BCM bolt and bcg
Triggertech special AR trigger
JP silent spring
Superlative arms adjustable gas block
It’s probably over your $2000 limit by a little but you could make adjustments and get it under.
But it’s unbelievably accurate.

Out of those you have listed LWRC or Geissele

He doenst want to build one or a one built by someone else. Says he wants the lifetime warranty that most carry and just wants an off the shelf duty rifle from a reputable company.

I tried to tell him he could buold something cool, but he just won't have it.

Military/LEO grade platform made to last a long time and aren't boutique/collectibles. Typically 14-16", chrome lined barrels with gov't profile, and forged M4 style uppers and lowers.

Essentially something that would be issued for everyday duty.

Second down vote.
Sir, you don’t have a clue.
And that’s putting it politely.

Please enlighten me with your grand wisdom? And I don't want to hear about a damn Radian or some high fashion AR that no one ever has in stock.

He's going to be throwing the rifle on the back of his 4 wheeler and using it to hunt with and carry with him in the woods all the time. It's going to get beat up. It's going to get abused. He doesn't live in a some lilly white cookie cutter subdivision like most of yall glorified city boys do. He uses his shite. He wants it to be bomb proof. That's the whole point of why he wants a warranty and respected brand with duty-grade rifle standards.

Everything you named is bomb proof. You can't go wrong. All those rifles will out last anything he will put them through. Don't believe the hype these companies put out there. They are trying to take your money. Of all the ones you listed, I'd buy the cheapest one. Also I would never pay 2k for a rifle off the shelf. If I'm spending 2k, it'll be onna gun I picked every piece out for.

All great options. Out of those I would go BCM or DD. I would also consider JP, SOLOGW, and ADM.

exactly

sorry if I was dick earlier, “duty rifle” just made me chuckle for some reason. literally any well known manufacturers’ rifle will outlast any abuse any civilian can dish out. Tell him to grab what he likes and can find and get to pew pew. I would wager a basic SW M&P will outlive your father in law, and mine

In the same line of thought as this thread, what are some key parts one should keep on hand for backup?

Just keep building and buying parts on sale. I’ve got enough parts in boxes to build 3 more ARs from upgrading and buying stuff here and there. It also doubles as backup parts for my primary rifles.

I'd just go without a weapon. If hunting, then take a hunting gun. Is Red Dawn coming ?

Probably just a bolt carrier group. Most people wont shoot enough to wear anything else out.

98% of people will never need to change a part on an AR if it's a quality gun. The guys that shoot 3gun always have a firing pin and trigger springs in their bag, but they are shooting 5K rounds a year minimum.
