If you always wanted a 1911 but could only have one handgun for eternity.....

Would you get a Ruger SR1911 CMD, or a small compact 9mm like the M&P Shield?
This is my dilemma.
I'm looking at buying the wife a small purse gun soon, and that has me looking at handguns for myself. I've always wanted a 1911, but this will likely be my one and only handgun for many years. I don't plan to carry every day, but I would some days. And I'd probably keep it in my truck/nightstand the rest of the time.
I can't afford two guns, nor can I afford a $1200 gun. I like the reviews on the Ruger SR1911 "Commander" and I'd love to have one. The price is more realistic for me as well.
If I don't get a 1911, I'd probably get something similar to the M&P Shield that would be easier to carry. I don't have any interest in the full size plastic guns.
I know this has been beaten to death, but I figured the OB faithful might have some input I hadn't considered.
1911
Sexy
More Power
Probably a better "investment"
Small 9mm
Cheaper
Easy to carry
Cheaper ammo
What says the all-knowing OB?

I have the Ruger SR1911 CMD and it definitely gets my vote. I wouldn't want a small compact to be my only handgun.

One gun for all around use with no chance of ever buying again? Glock 19. And I am on team 1911.

If your only gonna carry on occasion get the ruger.

That Ruger is a beautiful pistola.

It would be a revolver. Fewer moving parts.

1911, you hawk hunting bastard

Get a "hybrid". Sig P938. Basically a 9mm 1911 without the grip safety.
A compromise on the other end of the spectrum would be a glock 36. Very small and concealable pistol with .45 ACP stopping power. Thinnest gun glock makes (maybe outside of their new .380)
Choosing from your two options though I'd go with the ruger. I shot a 1911 for the first time Saturday, and I'll tell you what man, they are fine
It sounds like you really won't be carrying unless you foresee going into a rougher or unfamiliar part of town, in that case you aren't going to worry about comfort. I'd rather have a .45 on my nightstand than a 9mm (but I have a 10mm, so I'll never have to make that choice )
Speaking of, the glock model 29 gives you 10-15 rounds of bad to the bone tried and true 10mm stopping power in a subcompact pistol. It is sufficient enough power to carry as a sidearm in the the woods and will drop a hog or coyote where it stands.

I'd have to go with 9mm as well but not a shield.
Probably a S&W mp9c or glock 19. Still farely small, but with twice the bullets as a single stack.

I will say this: Of all my handguns, my Beretta Nano is one of my favorites. It really has surprised me.

Thinking about it, if I could only have one handgun it would be the glock 29 (even though I don't currently own one)
It's just a jack of all trades
Massive Firepower? Check
Small and easily concealed? Check
High cap mag? Check
Reliable? check
After market products readily available? check
Only downside is that ammo is 37-40 cents per round on the low end, ehich isn't terrible but isn't great either.
If I was looking for a gun that fit all the above criteria plus cheap ammo (with a dropoff in power) I'd go with a compact glock in .40 caliber

Yeah, I guess I went a little extreme with the revolver because "for eternity" scared me a little bit. If a big daddy revolver can't get you out of trouble, then you were never in the fight to begin with.

By the way, I CANNOT WAIT to order my CZ P-07. I'm going to put a new tactical light on that bad boy.

I think if you get a polymer 9mm, you will have a fine weapon that will suffice in nearly any task you ask of it, but you will still want the 1911. If you get what you truly want, then you more than likely wont regret it down the road. If I faced your decision, I would get the 1911 no doubt about it.

Hey man, I agree and I'll never own one, i'm just trying to cover all the scenarios here.
What's right for me might not be right for teague/vice versa.
a .40 will put your dick in the dirt better than a 9mm and hold as many rounds, or close to it also.
Like I said, if I had to pick an all-purpose do it all gun, which is what I'd be looking for if I could only have one (nightstand, comfortable carry piece, woods gun) I'd go with the Glock 29 chambered in 10mm.

I don't know what this board has against a .40 caliber handgun.

This CZ I just got will not be my last. Just a brilliant gun, I'm amazed they cost as low as they do. My next one will probably be an aluminum or polymer instead of the steel, just for something different
